Illuminating ‘Short Circuits'

A collection of short works by 64 writers, with a fantastic cover designed by SCAD alumna Jordan Wannemacher (B.F.A., graphic design, 2012), "Short Circuits" (Schaffner Press, 2018) may offer the rewiring the contemporary mind requires. Co-edited by SCAD writing professor James Lough and fellow author Alex Stein, the book delves into literary liminal zones that feel both primeval and postmodern. As "Short Circuits" contributor Lily Akerman writes: "The map's creases are another map."

Paradoxically, the book's longest piece of writing may be its most stimulating. In his introductory essay "This Is Your Brain on Words: The Neurological Fruits of Literary Surprise" Lough posits the indivisibility of form and function, where pithiness approaches godliness. Rather than lambast Twitter, Lough traces the history of shorter forms, connecting their enlightening potential on human thought and action.

"The reading experience has gotten choppier, more distracted than focused, more associative than linear," Lough writes, "This book…can be seen as a brick and mortar adaptation to digital trends."

"Short Circuits" is available now.

SCAD: How does "Short Circuits" differ from the previous anthology you and Alex Stein edited, 2015's "Short Flights"?

JAMES LOUGH: "Short Flights" contained only aphorisms. "Short Circuits" is a completely new book. This time we decided to feature a wider variety of types of work including haiku, flash fiction, micro-essays and concrete poetry. We also have writers like Claudia Rankine, Maggie Nelson and Sarah Manguso, whose names you may recognize.

We'd sent out a request to all of our writers from "Short Flights" asking if you know anyone who's doing interesting stuff on Twitter and is somewhat literary, please let us know. We got some great stuff. There's one Twitter account @dogsdoingthings which is dogs who are nihilists commenting on the state of the planet and the state of humanity. And there's a guy named @WernerTwertzog, a pseudonym of an academic and journalist named William Pannapacker, who's fantastic. "Short Circuits" also features stand-up comedians Charlene deGuzman and Mike Ginn. They write jokes but they're so informed and ironic that they went in.

SCAD: What's the origin of the aphorism?

LOUGH: I'd say it goes back to the Hindu Vedas, a religious text that was as much instruction manual as it was testament to faith. The Vedas are not exactly aphorisms in the sense they don't have a twist, they're not what we'd call literary, but they are pithy and condensed pieces of wisdom in sequence.

The aphorism as we know it today really starts in the 18th century, with the sardonic or radical twist that upsets expectation and can be scandalous. Oscar Wilde was the king of that. Prior to Wilde, Benjamin Franklin wrote proverbs, but he also wrote "Fish and visitors smell after three days" which is more an aphorism.

SCAD: Is the aphorism a teachable literary form?

LOUGH: Absolutely. I'm teaching WRIT 707 "The Art of the Sentence" now, and to get students started writing aphorisms, we look at other aphorisms and riff on them. "Healthy, wealthy and wise? No one gets all three." That kind of thing. The first assignment is to write ten aphorisms. A lot of ruminating goes into that. Aphorisms are fun to work with, because you just sit down and write one. The final project is to write mini-essays of no more than 100 words.

Two of the students who took the class last year are featured in "Short Circuits": Zara Bell (M.F.A., painting; B.F.A., writing, 2016) and Emily Peck (M.F.A., themed entertainment design, 2017). We're going to do a reading at SCAD MOA on April 26 at 5 p.m. and Zara will join me, as well as another special guest. The reading should be a lot of fun. As one of our contributors Hart Pomerantz said: "An aphorism is a joke that went to college."

Interior designers foster change

The last day of winter quarter feels like spring, but inside Clark Hall, interior design students Lauren Brackett and Sydney White are focused on foster care.

Presentation boards, capsules of their 26-week, double-quarter projects, stand alongside books detailing their designs and supporting research.

"Our professor Christina Gonano told us to find a gap in society, something we can fix in design," explains Brackett (B.F.A., interior design, 2018). "I have a family friend who started an organization called Fostering Youth Independence, so my idea was to design the dream facility for what they're doing with foster children."

"I was in foster care as a kid," says White (B.F.A., interior design, 2018). "My experience revealed how unstable it is. So, I designed a place separate from foster homes, for foster children ages 7-13. It doesn't matter how many times foster kids move within a city, they still have a place that's there for them, outside of a home."

Lauren and Sydney had never met when they showed up on the first day of Gonano's "Interior Design Studio V: Design Thinking for Innovation" class, though both already planned on creating capstone projects focused on foster care. As Brackett explains, "We wound up sitting next to each other and sharing research, reading as many relevant scholarly articles as we could and dissecting them so we had facts and evidence to back our ideas up."

Brackett's "Third Point" design targets young adults who are leaving foster care and need a resource center where they can better manage that challenging transition. "The resources that are currently available are spread across so many platforms, so I thought, if I can bring career counseling and financial aid help into one place, they have a better chance to succeed." Bracket designed a center that also features a gym and a teaching kitchen, for a holistic, life skills approach to health.

White's "Tree House" design, with its ligneous materials palette, modular and organic, includes touch screens for activity planning, rearrangeable furniture, and lockers "where kids can put their stuff and leave it the entire time they're in the program."

The coursework made White reflect on her own experience: "Going to school as a foster kid, you know that you're different from everyone else. At a place like Tree House, everyone is equal. It creates camaraderie and community that kids might not have otherwise. That's important."

Brackett designed her center to be located in Santa Clarita, California. White set hers in Winter Park, Florida. Both explored specific details of site building, examining issues including transportation and proximity to adjacent services like restaurants, shops, schools and indoor and outdoor recreation.

Having both graduated after winter quarter, they now go forth into their lives: White moving to Florida where she will work as interior design associate for Marc-Michaels Interior Design, while Brackett heads to Texas to explore opportunities in Austin's professional interior design sector.

"We'll be back in Savannah," Brackett says. "We have a senior show Friday, June 1, the same day as our graduation ceremony."

White nods in enthusiasm. "It's definitely been a great experience at SCAD."

SCAD Hong Kong students visit Sri Lanka

SCAD student Katherine Diaz Villegas (B.F.A, fashion) spent her winter quarter studying abroad at SCAD Hong Kong. Here, she writes about her week in Sri Lanka investigating sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

At SCAD Hong Kong, certain classes are offered the special opportunity to take a week-long trip to experience different aspects of the industry work. This winter quarter the fashion design, interior design, fashion marketing and management undergraduate students and luxury fashion marketing and management graduate students traveled to Sri Lanka, one of the world’s leading countries in sustainability.

It was chilly in Hong Kong during February so a trip to a warmer climate was exciting. The weather helped ensure we packed light as we would be moving around Sri Lanka throughout the week. After arriving at night in the city of Colombo, we started our trip early the following morning at Island Craft Studio, an initiative supporting local artisans through contemporary design integration. The young designers were so welcoming as we toured their working spaces and attended presentations from both Island Craft Studio designers and SCAD students. Sharing ideas on the curriculum and the possibilities of the future made for exciting conversations with the talented young designers of Sri Lanka.

The focus of our trip was to learn about sustainability from industry professionals. A tour of Selyn, a fair trade textile and production company, provided a first-hand experience of textile development and production. The representatives of the company took the group through each part of the process, from dyeing the fibers the perfect shade (a process that could take weeks) to witnessing handloom weavers create vibrant and patterned textiles, to a sorting warehouse that ensures the seamless quality of the work. The fabric is then sent either to buyers or taken back to a production area for the fabrication of clothes, toys and home décor. Ending the tour at a Selyn store to see the finished products was inspiring.

The following day we explored more of the culture and heritage sites of Sri Lanka. The morning began with a hike up the World Heritage site, Sigiriya, where the view and ruins of the palace were breathtaking. Afterwards, we stopped at the Kandalama Hotel for a tour of the space and lunch. The hotel was designed by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and is based on the idea of working in concert with the environment. Part of the hotel is built on natural rock and is completely open to the environment producing more light and air, contributing to the theme of sustainability. Though the trip so far had been impeccable, our next event felt like something out of a film. Our bus dropped us off to a line-up of jeeps ready to take us on our Minneriya safari, where we got to see multiple herds of elephants and other animals at Minneriya National Park.

Our last day before our free day was filled with two apparel factory tours. We started with Linea Aqua Factory Tour, producers of  swimwear. The tour took us through the process, from designs to laser-cutting patterns to the organized rows of sewing and embellishments. We also saw the administrative side of the business, including production planning and product goals. Our next stop was Hirdaramani, an apparel manufacturer in a zero carbon building and factory. The tour led us through the process of dyeing and working with denim as a textile. Much of their work is still hand frayed and bleached. The factory had its own dye plants, giant washers and dryers and a laser cutting and engraving system. It was impressive to see a factory committed to sustainability in action.

During the trip we stopped at various shops that had handmade home décor, clothing and art. Paradise Road Gallery Café was a personal favorite, serving scrumptious food and fresh juice. The shop was the perfect place to pick up souvenirs and gifts.

Throughout the six days I spent in Sri Lanka, I saw more of the beautiful country and met more inspiring people than I ever would have on my own. SCAD provided the opportunity for students to enjoy a learning experience outside of the classroom, in the heart of the specific industries we’re preparing to join. This was a once in a lifetime experience that will stay with me throughout my future endeavors.

Anna Brettschneider's textile design delights

Anna Brettschneider's easygoing ebullience belies an incredible creative ethic. The Savannah native and senior textile designer (B.F.A., fibers) is adept at digital and tactile media, gouache and collage, painting on prints of her own photographs, and recombining elements in ways that would make her artistic forebears Sonia Delaunay and Henri Matisse proud. They also might ask to borrow her kimono.

Ann Brettschneider models the back of the kimono made with her colorful abstract print

SCAD: Cool kimono, Anna!

ANNA BRETTSCHNEIDER: Making the kimono was fun. I used that pattern previously in my upholstery swatch collection, so I wanted to see how it would look on chiffon. When I'd printed it on cotton sateen for the upholstery fabric the pattern was kind of stagnant. But when it's on a garment it moves, it's layered, you can see some of the pattern underneath. I combined the pattern with photos I had painted on and printed out and scanned back in and made into a repeat pattern. I did a lot of hand painting on the pattern as well.

SCAD: Did you apply similar techniques to your scarves?

BRETTSCHNEIDER: Yes. My scarf is a four-color design. It's a 37-inch square. I like it as a wall piece but it can be worn, of course. I initially wrote with a pencil on paper what it means to be "SPIRITED" – that's the word of my senior thesis. I created color recipes. We use dyes to print the scarves, so it's a teaspoon of fuchsia, half of basic red…it's really exact, so that if I liked one color I could make a big batch. Print paste allows the dye to be thicker through the screen and onto the fabric, it gives it some substance. I use liquid reactive dyes in powder form mixed with water and urea water to create the dye. It's more scientific than you might think.

SCAD: A lot of technical know-how goes into your joyous work. How does that relate to preparing for a creative career?

BRETTSCHNEIDER: From Barry Roode, my digital pattern professor for "Print and Pattern for Industry" I learned about industry standards and how pattern design gets translated. You need to know that when you're working on a print design job for a big company. I learned how to make my own swatch book. You got to choose your substrate and I chose wallpaper. It was a really professional class that helped me grow within my skills, visually and with hand-painting.

Classes like "Fibers Senior Studio" II and III are especially focused on steps you make to speak with companies, getting your website and portfolio together, an emphasis on LinkedIn, having your work look good on a platform where people can find it. It helps to make connections.

Last summer I lived in San Francisco and interned as a designer at Pottery Barn in the teen department, PBteen. I worked with the buying intern, merchandising intern, and industrial design intern who did hard goods. We collaborated to create two dorms rooms for a girl and a guy so I did textiles for that, and we presented that to the CEO of Williams Sonoma. It went really well. Products are supposed to be coming out that have my designs on them, desk and laptop accessories.

SCAD: What's your secret, Anna?

BRETTSCHNEIDER: I try to manifest happiness in all my work.

Hannah Amidon's 'Punny World'

Between class, soccer practice and a part-time coaching gig, SCAD sophomore Hannah Amidon (B.F.A., illustration) has developed excellent time management skills. SCAD has also given her the freedom to feed her passion for wordplay. A self-proclaimed pun enthusiast, Hannah experiments with double entendres by drawing literal cartoon interpretations of common expressions such as "dancing shoes" and "mind in the gutter."

Follow this artist-athlete on Instagram @hannahamidonart to see her hilarious illustrations and get updates on her forthcoming book, "It's A Punny World," a collection of her favorite drawings.

SCAD: How did you make the decision to study at SCAD?

HANNAH AMIDON: I first heard about SCAD during a Disney Girls Soccer Showcase I competed in during my junior year in high school, where I met SCAD soccer coach Rebecca Gunn. When I visited SCAD and the city of Savannah, it was love at first sight. This city is beautiful and the university has so many things to offer.

SCAD: When did you know you wanted to study illustration?

AMIDON: I've been drawing ever since I can remember. My mother, oldest brother and stepdad are all artists. I originally enrolled in the SCAD graphic design program, but in the middle of freshman year, it hit me that I have a very specific style and that it was an illustrative medium.

SCAD: Do you have a favorite SCAD professor or class?

AMIDON: I am currently taking ILLU 160 “Illustrative Anatomy and Perspective” with professor Mike Wimmer. I was intimidated at first, because I am not much of a realistic drawer. But now I’m branching out and trying different things. It’s crazy to look back and see improvement!

SCAD: How do you think of puns for your illustrations?

AMIDON: Honestly, they just come to me. A while ago, I created a painting and when I was done my brother said, “Oh, that's smellivision!” Ever since then, I can’t think of anything that isn’t a pun.

SCAD: How do you balance being a student, a soccer player and a coach?

AMIDON: I've been bending it like Beckham ever since I was four years old, and I joined the SCAD women’s soccer team in August 2016. During soccer season we travel a lot, but I can use the long hours on the bus to study with teammates from all different majors. It’s a challenge, but in the long run, it's so worth it. Our former captain, Kelly McKay, said that soccer is where we get away from all the stress, and it’s a blessing to be able to do that. I am also a part-time coach at Savannah United, which has taken me back to the roots of soccer and reminded me why I love it.

SCAD: Do you have any advice for new students about how to make the most of their SCAD experience?

AMIDON: Get involved! You are so lucky to have such an amazing campus, dorms, and city. Take advantage of every second. Time flies by, so manage your it and don't procrastinate.

The winners of SCAD Drawing Works 2018 have been announced, with Camille Gbaguidi (M.F.A., architecture) awarded top prize. Undergraduate students from all SCAD locations and minors/majors were eligible. Diverse drawing practices were considered, demonstrating traditional and unconventional use of media, experimentation, aesthetic expressions, styles and formats.

The unlikely trajectory of Kayo Chang

Kayo Chang is an intriguing global citizen. The Taiwanese-Canadian graduate student, formerly head librarian at SCAD Hong Kong, is now enrolled as an M.F.A. candidate in the SCAD writing program. She has penned essays for SCAD Manor on subjects including clothing designer Janet Wong (B.F.A. fashion, 2016), who not so coincidentally designed the dress for Chang's wedding to Derek Black, associate dean of academic services, SCAD Hong Kong. Currently studying at SCAD Savannah, Kayo will return to Hong Kong next quarter to begin an internship at ArtAsiaPacific. There's more to come from this busy Bee.

SCAD: How does your SCAD story begin?

KAYO CHANG: I started working at SCAD Hong Kong in January 2014, after the human resources director messaged me to say: "We're looking for a librarian." At that specific moment I was in Causeway Bay picking up my runner's pack for a marathon. The following Monday I went to the SCAD Hong Kong building in Sham Shui Po for an interview. I fell in love with SCAD as soon as I walked into the building oozing color and beauty. When I started working at SCAD Hong Kong as head librarian, I had two staff and four part-time employees. I loved the students and the books and my colleagues. It was ideal.

SCAD: How did you, as librarian, collaborate with professors?

CHANG: One instance is when Professor Cristina Kountiou and I developed an assignment for her class "FASM 400: Contemporary Issues in Fashion Merchandising." Instead of writing a research paper, each student would edit an existing Wikipedia page on a topic of their choice. For example, one student chose the topic "fast fashion." When we looked at the Wikipedia page it had nothing on the environmental impact of fast fashion, so the student added the whole section. The point was to teach critical thinking, improve students' writing skills, and gain insight into the bias present on Wikipedia. It was a really cool project.

SCAD: How did you go from being head librarian to becoming a student?

CHANG: I always wanted to be a writer. My husband Derek said, "You should!" So, I took my first writing class in winter 2017, "Nonfiction I" in Hong Kong, via SCAD eLearning, while I was still working full-time as the head librarian.

This quarter I'm here in Savannah taking "The Publishing Process" with the professor Lee Griffith. I'm writing a proposal for a book I want to write, part of my M.F.A. thesis. I'm using this book to explore different ideas and combined narratives. I had a secular and Canadian worldview as a young adult, so one narrative is about growing up in Vancouver. Another narrative is about going to Taiwan as an adult and learning about my family. And a third concerns Guan Yin, "The Goddess of Mercy," who my grandmother has a statue of and who has special significance to me.

The writing is a challenge, but with the support of my thesis chair, Dr. James Lough, it's going well. The SCAD curriculum is perfect for the kind of writer I want to be.

SCAD aTVfest catches the branded buzz

SCAD is at the forefront of the world of branded entertainment. In 2014, SCAD began offering the first academic degree program in branded entertainment in the United States. And at SCAD aTVfest 2018 in Atlanta, branded entertainment was the focus of multiple panel discussions, including "The Art of Branded Entertainment" featuring panelists Caressa Douglas of Branded Entertainment Network and Brian Tolleson of creative agency Bark Bark.

At "The Art of Branded Entertainment,", aTVfest attendees learned how an apparently new model of promotion has roots as old as television itself.

Douglas, a senior vice president at the Bill Gates-founded Branded Entertainment Network, explained that branded entertainment dates to early television shows entirely sponsored by a single brand. When production costs and talent fees increased from the late 1950s through the 1970s, sponsorships converted to multiple brands buying 30-second spots on shows.

Modern product placement took off in the early 1980s with the insertion of Reese's Pieces in the blockbuster film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." More than three decades later, entire companies exist to create content for brands that want to be in this space. One such agency is Atlanta-based Bark Bark, whose founder is Brian Tolleson.

"Television once had interruptive commercials," Tolleson told the aTVfest audience, "but now with integration, brands have become part of storytelling."

Today's younger viewers are accustomed to skipping commercials with streaming and online viewing. With $150 billion spent globally each year on all types of advertising buys, even the biggest player in the business, Netflix, must participate. If they do not, the advertising dollar will find a willing partner elsewhere.

Another reason is the increase in quality and budgets of television series. For example, "The Crown" is budgeted at $5 million per episode. To interrupt such a visually sophisticated production with a commercial simply wouldn't work.
