It's almost time to Escalate. The SCAD-produced fashion film, directed by Chris Anthony Hamilton, lauds historic changemakers and their legacies. Visitors can experience Escalate Oct. 13, 2021 – April 16, 2022 in the Film Salon of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta.

The high concept film showcases student and alumni works created for the SCAD Changemakers Alumni Design Challenge. Envisioned by SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace and juried by Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, the challenge invited exceptional alumni from the university’s top-ranked School of Fashion to design futuristic fashions evoking history-changing leaders, inspired by Carter’s iconic work for film.

Escalate features extraordinary garments by challenge finalists, giving flight to a dream-like odyssey in which vital social, cultural, and political figures of the past and present celebrate creative expression, with a vision to a more inclusive future. Garments pay tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Malcolm X, David Bowie, Semiha Berksoy, Fela Kuti, Elaine Brown, and Stokely Carmichael, among others.

SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace said: “Where else but SCAD can you share your work with Academy Award-winning designer Ruth E. Carter and see your designs featured in an exclusive fashion film for the festival circuit? Alumni designers featured in Escalate testify to a powerful truth: SCAD loves and never ceases celebrating, elevating, and advancing the careers of SCAD graduates. We love our Bees, and our Bees love fashion!”

Filmed on-site at SCAD Atlanta, Escalate demonstrates the imagination, ingenuity, and exceptional talents of students and alumni from SCAD’s globally recognized degree programs in fashion, production design, jewelry, and performing arts. Production credits highlight student and alumni talent across SCAD’s Schools of Entertainment Arts and Digital Media, with many of the film’s performers placed through the SCAD Casting Office, the only professionally run university casting office in the U.S. Vibrating with choreography by celebrated dancer T. Lang and music composed by cellist-songwriter Okorie Johnson (OkCello), Escalate also centers SCAD’s role as a performing arts incubator for the Atlanta creative community.

“Any historical figure, known or unknown, famous or lost in time, is deserving of honest research,” said Carter, who is known for her own in-depth historical research underpinning her design process. “And in that study of humanity, a person reveals their true self. From the Changemakers design challenge to the film and beyond, I am so proud of these SCAD students and alumni. The work of the SCAD community never ceases to amaze me.”

Carter is a longtime champion of SCAD and its students. Building on the designer’s engagement with the university and her personal legacy, SCAD proudly announces the establishment of the Ruth E. Carter Endowed Scholarship to be awarded to a rising star student in the School of Fashion. This endowed scholarship, made possible by Carter, exemplifies her supreme generosity to SCAD students and cements her unwavering support and inspiration for the next generation of creative leaders and changemakers.

“I feel honored and grateful to have my design, which was inspired by the formidable Justice Ginsburg, recognized by Ruth E. Carter,” said Viviane Carvahlo (B.F.A., fashion, 2016), who won the Changemakers Alumni Design Challenge with her garment interpreting the social and cultural impact of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “It is a dream come true to now see my creation come to life in this film.”

Sabbatical spotlight: Hsu-Jen Huang

"Water is a live element that creates human engagement and informs the built environment," says architecture professor Hsu-Jen Huang, a two-time recipient of the SCAD Presidential Fellowship and Sabbatical Award. "Water moves."

Pre-pandemic, Huang traveled to the river towns of China's Jiangnan region—south of the Yangtze River, straddling Shanghai—where he inked his impressions, an artistic practice he calls "talking to the environment." Returning to Savannah, sequestered in his studio, he then hand-painted some two dozen paper parasols, which became the stars of his sabbatical short film "Beyond the River"—an exquisite rumble of color and movement, created with the participation of SCAD students.

Huang's practice of sketching his surroundings dates to his early ventures as a SCAD recruiter, when he would arrive in a U.S. town or city, sketch the sights, then integrate that work into his presentation to prospective students. This literal and symbolic through-line, from a professor who joined SCAD in 1998, assumes a cumulative power informed by his deep understanding of architecture and world history. When researching, visiting, observing and documenting, Huang says, "I always travel with an agenda, never with expectations."

2012 sabbatical research, "Journey | Destination Tibetan Plateau: Views of the Tibetan Plateau."

Hsu-Jen Huang:

My sabbatical project focuses on the six famous historic water towns in the Jiangnan area of Southern China. I recorded and documented their current character through my personal graphic vocabulary of photography, sketches, and mixed media representations. My intent was to reflect the broader scope of each immediate setting, its relationship with its inhabitants, and its response to modern pressures and influences.

The project advanced my professional and academic expertise in southern Chinese architecture and culture, and allowed me to research and document the unique water townscape. It enhanced my knowledge of Chinese architecture and the built environment, and how water influenced urban development. These are important areas that contribute to my architecture and urban design coursework for students across multiple disciplines within the SCAD School of Building Arts, and across the university. This is particularly important due to SCAD's role as an international institution with a diverse student body and an international approach to architecture education.

With the increasing reliance on digital tools in education, I have noticed that students depend upon technology, and this significantly impacts the ways they conceptualize design and perceive the environment, as well as the depth of those perceptions. I want to promote documentation in the form of photographs, videos, drawings, and sketches, thereby ensuring that students gain skills that contribute to their understanding and appreciation of the physical environment. These are aspects that, as designers, affect a critical difference in the ability to create buildings, interiors, products, and other artifacts that contribute to our culture.

My sabbatical project provides valuable documentation of the southern Chinese architecture and the waterscape town design, as well as the impact of modernization on traditional and vernacular architecture. The impact of conservation efforts are a special area of consideration.

This project is a continuation of my 2012 sabbatical research, "Journey | Destination Tibetan Plateau: Views of the Tibetan Plateau." I want to thank President Wallace for endowing this fellowship which has contributed so much to my professional development and my role as a member of SCAD faculty.

Another scene from "Journey | Destination Tibetan Plateau: Views of the Tibetan Plateau."

SCAD recognizes that continuous faculty professional development contributes significantly to the quality of teaching and learning at the university. The SCAD Presidential Fellowship and Sabbatical Awards provide eligible professors with opportunities to pursue professional growth and new or renewed professional achievement through study, research, and practice.

SCAD Lacoste reopens in incomparable style

Rebonjour! SCAD is pleased to announce the re-opening of SCAD Lacoste, an imaginative center for the study of art and design sited in the beautifully preserved medieval village of Lacoste in the Provence region of France. In 2002, SCAD acquired the site and meticulously revitalized more than 30 historic structures. This summer, SCAD will host dynamic activations throughout SCAD Lacoste, inspiring students, alumni, and visitors to the region.

The exhibition Notre Ami, Pierre Cardin, the university's latest ode and homage to the indomitable designer, is now open to the public. The exhibition features exceptional garments and two films produced by the university — including I Am Thinking of Pierre Cardin, awarded Best Fashion Documentary at the London Film Festival — celebrating Cardin's remarkable life story. The exhibition is set in an installation reminiscent of Cardin's famous Palais Bulles, his dream residence near Cannes and a future-forward architectural marvel that rivaled his greatest fashion creations.

Notre Ami, Pierre Cardin highlights the designer's long and treasured friendship with the university that began with the establishment of SCAD Lacoste in the historic village, which Cardin, a longtime resident, knew would serve as an endless source of inspiration for young artists. For nearly two decades, Cardin embraced the role of mentor, engaging hundreds of SCAD students across the university's top-ranked degree programs, from fashion to architecture and beyond.

An exhibit at SCAD Lacoste

In 2008, the university honored Cardin with the SCAD Étoile for his contributions to the fields of fashion and design as well as his role in the historic restoration and cultural life of Lacoste. In 2018, the university's SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta originated the exhibition Pierre Cardin: Pursuit of the Future, a major retrospective presented in partnership with the Pierre Cardin Museum in Paris that included iconic looks from the 1950s held in the SCAD Permanent Collection. Notre Ami, Pierre Cardin is curated by Rafael Gomes, head of fashion exhibitions at SCAD, in collaboration with Pierre Cardin Paris and Rodrigo Basilicati.

Visitors to Lacoste can also experience the creative process firsthand as they observe working artists selected for the prestigious SCAD Alumni Atelier, an elite artist residency conceptualized and endowed by SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace. Originated in 2015, the SCAD Alumni Atelier offers visionary graduates the time, space, resources, and business education to thrive creatively and professionally. As ambassadors or associates, alumni advance their careers, strengthen their connection to the university, and join a select cohort of emerging and established entrepreneurs, artists, designers, and scholars. Now in its sixth year, the SCAD Alumni Atelier has disbursed more than $1 million in support of new or expanded alumni ventures including fashion brands, jewelry collections, screenplays, feature films, exhibitions, and more — a testament to the university's lifelong commitment to the SCAD community.

Launched in 2021, the SCAD Alumni Atelier associateship encourages graduates to pursue their creative practice with a focus on engagement with the SCAD community. While creating, ideating, or brand building, associates reconnect with faculty, serve as student mentors, and engage with staff in admission, communications, and career and alumni success. SCAD Alumni Atelier associates Melinda Borysevicz (B.F.A., painting, 2011), Masako Maupu Masukawa (M.F.A., illustration, 1995; B.F.A., illustration, 1992), Liz Robb (M.F.A., fibers, 2014), Serge Ruffato (B.F.A., sculpture, 2012), and William M. Ruller (M.F.A., painting, 2013) will create new work in personal studios within the university's enchanting medieval caves and share their artistic practice with students and the public throughout the summer.

The university will also reopen shopSCAD in Lacoste. Nested on the Rue Saint-Trophime, the boutique retail space and gallery features an ever-changing melange of original jewelry, accessories, apparel, stationery, home décor, and unique gifts by SCAD students, alumni, and faculty.

"Summer sunshine bathes France's Luberon Valley in lavender hues and beckons adventurers to SCAD Lacoste, where enthralling exhibitions and explorations await," says President Wallace. "À bientôt!"

Key Light awards luminous work

"Key light" is a photography term describing the most important light source used in creating the form of a subject. The "key" idea also references problem-solving, unlocking, and deciphering.

The SCAD Key Light Alumni Photography Challenge 2021 was created by President Paula Wallace to provide a platform for alumni of the university's award-winning photography program. President Wallace asked a select group of graduates — each recognized for their unique gifts of design and execution — to take inspiration from the current SCAD FASH exhibition Albert Watson: The Light Behind the Lens. (When discussing his work, Watson often speaks about the importance of positioning the key light.) A team of judges, including professors, curators, and Watson himself, evaluated the photographs, providing feedback and awarding standout works.

"With this challenge, I can see the creative energy in the photographs," said Albert Watson. "It was clear the students set out to make a statement."

This presidential initiative challenged the graduates to consider Watson's work and expert use of light as a point of departure to achieve their own visions. Nineteen SCAD photography alumni participated in the Key Light challenge.

Through in-person and virtual tours of Watson's exhibition at SCAD FASH, these alumni engaged the museum as an educational and archival resource for projects that paid homage to Watson's keen eye and mesmerizing work. The challenge provided a unique opportunity for these accomplished alums to interact with the prolific master of photography. Each artist received an honorarium upon completion of their work. Key Light is representative of President Wallace's ongoing dedication to engaging alumni through providing creative opportunities, exposure and recognition.

Three honorees were selected as outstanding submissions in recognition of their interpretation of the iconic photographer's distinctive style, use of shadow and light, and creative vision.

The honorees are: Emily Earl (B.F.A, photography, 2007) for "Moonbather"; Sequoyah Wildwyn-Dechter (B.F.A. photography, 2019) for "Untitled"; and Shine Huang (M.F.A, photography, 2017) for "Tinker, Chef, Fish." As recognition for their work and selection, each artist was awarded an additional $2,000 honorarium. All photography submissions from the "Key Light" challenge, including video of the alumni master class interaction with Watson will be showcased on scadfash.org/key-light-challenge.

Michael James O'Brien, associate chair, SCAD photography: "All the artists who submitted were winners. We were so thrilled to see such creative and beautiful work from these talented artists from SCAD's top ranked photography program, and who I have also had the privilege of mentoring. Albert's in-depth commentary and his recognition of the accomplished SCAD alumni work made this challenge especially successful."

"I appreciate the premise of this challenge; create like one of the greats, but make it your own," said honoree Sequoyah Wildwyn-Dechter. "Having my work in front of Albert Watson's eyes is still a little surreal to me, but it's one of the reasons I'm so grateful to SCAD for providing these types of opportunities. You won't get them anywhere else."

"At SCAD, we embrace collective genius and connection," said SCAD President and Founder Paula S. Wallace during this year's commencement. These aspects combined at a ceremony where President Wallace was aptly on hand to distribute popsicles to newly minted alumni.

Friday was a tad warm, Saturday nice and breezy. Both days lifted the spirits of the SCAD graduating class of 2021. Ceremonies in Savannah and Atlanta featured the in-person awarding of diplomas, as well as virtual features including a commencement address by Dan Levy. The award-winning writer, actor, director, and producer encouraged the more than 3,300 graduates to "always follow through."

"If you have an idea for something, in whatever form of the arts it is, if you have that painting that you have in mind, and it gets tricky and you are given that crossroads, 'Do I give up or do I keep going?'–always keep going," Levy said.

Keeping with SCAD's commitment to utilize the best aspects of all media, the university presented a digital commencement for all graduates, providing students and audiences around the world with a front-row seat to the momentous occasion. Following the digital ceremony, the Presentation of Degrees ceremonies took place at socially distanced, outdoor, in-person events in both Atlanta and Savannah, where faculty representatives called the names of graduates as they strode across the bespoke, radiant stage. Balloon sculptures by Jason Hackenwerth (M.F.A., painting, 2003) added to an atmosphere of well-earned fun.

After fifteen months of restrictions, the reality of togetherness brought a palpable frisson to the ceremonies. As President Wallace said: "'Once a Bee, Always A Bee'—our hive ever uplifts you!" Congratulations, SCAD Class of '21.

The day after Variety named SCAD one of the Top 50 Film Schools and Instructors From Around the World, SCAD officially announced the construction of the Savannah Film Studios backlot at a ceremony commemorating the expansion of the university's film and digital media studios.

Speaking to a crowd that included Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, journalists, and invited guests, SCAD President Paula Wallace expressed her excitement over the development. "This ten-acre studio complex and backlot is unsurpassed in higher education," Wallace said. "This studio has a very special resource you won't find at any other film school, an indoor extended reality XR stage where the weather's always perfect and the magic hour never fades."

Those in attendance could look across the parking lot to see construction crews working as Wallace spoke. Designed in partnership with SCAD alumna Sarah Linebaugh (M.F.A., motion media design, 2014) and her studio MEPTIK, the XR stage conjures backgrounds from city streets to fantasy realms and everything in between. The technology uses augmented and extended reality, replacing the need for traditional painted backdrops. "This is unrivaled in higher education," Wallace said. "This stage will become home to revolutionary leaps in cinematic storytelling for years to come."

South and east of the xR stage will be a Hollywood-style backlot, complete with town square, brownstones, palatial mansion, and a cobblestone-lined Savannah street. In addition to the variety of homes and neighborhoods, the lot will include a sets for a police station, hospital, restaurants, and shops.

Loren Ruch, group senior VP of development and production for HGTV, said, "I am extremely pleased to hear about the expansion of Savannah Film Studios, and look forward to the potential partnerships that may ensue with SCAD in the months and years to come. I've always valued the incredible facilities and individuals associated with SCAD, so this only adds to what has already been a wonderful resource in the world of content creation."

There are nearly 20,000 SCAD Bees currently working or preparing to work in the film and television industry, including one-hundred and twelve individuals who worked on Academy Award nominated films for the year 2021. The Savannah Film Studios expansion promises to be a proving ground for students going forward and a hub of interdisciplinary intermingling.

Following Wallace's remarks, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson thanked SCAD for advancing the creative spirit in the city and emphasizing Savannah's importance to the film industry. He got a laugh from the crowd with his good-natured parting remark, "All I have to say is, Tyler Perry, eat your heart out."

The backlot is currently under construction with phase one of three planned to open in fall of 2021. The entire project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2023.
