SCAD Film Studios Savannah
SCAD Film Studios in Savannah is the largest and most comprehensive university film studio complex in higher education, offering world-class production spaces and state-of-the-art technology to student filmmakers, digital media artists, actors, and designers in Georgia's booming entertainment industry. The heart of the university’s School of Film and Acting, the 16-acre studio is designed for professional and student productions, with a 5,500 sq. ft., leading-edge LED volume stage, multiple purpose-built soundstages, an expansive Hollywood-style backlot, and a 17,000 sq. ft. production design and costume design building. Filmmakers also have access to extensive virtual production and postproduction suites, among other industry-standard technology. The complex is complemented by SCAD Film Studios in Atlanta and its own state-of-the-art spaces.
SCAD opened its original Savannah Film Studios in 2014, in a 22,000 sq. ft. building that once housed a meatpacking plant for the Southeast region. Savannah Film Studios contained the studio’s first three soundstages, postproduction suites, a recording booth, and production offices. In the spring of 2021, SCAD acquired the acreage around Savannah Film Studios and announced a major expansion of the site, a landmark buildout that transformed the surrounding parcels into the current studio complex. That fall, the university opened its first LED volume stage, which utilizes camera tracking and real-time rendering to create an immersive virtual mixed reality environment, visible live on set and shot directly on camera. The backlot followed in three phases: a section resembling Savannah’s historic district opened in fall 2023; an area with gritty urban environments opened in fall 2024, coupled with the complex’s production design spaces; and the final phase, with a suburban town square and soundstages, was completed in fall 2026.
