Johana Moscoso: she dances salsa

"I put glue on my feet and I dance," said Johana Moscoso during her show-opening talk at SCAD MOA. The Bogotá-born artist was referring to an important step—literally—in her process, as she preps fabric for the final addition of metallic foil. The vivid dividends of her footwork dominate her new exhibition, Entre sistemas invisibles.

Moscoso (M.F.A., sculpture, 2009) hand-stitches layers of fabric together using a traditional technique called mola. She explained that the reverse applique method originated with indigenous Latin American communities like the Kuna. Layers of cloth are sewn together, then cut away to reveal designs and symbols. "Their stitching is invisible, because that's how incredible the indigenous work is," Moscoso said, affirming the inspiration for the title of her show.

The gallery talk was a lively conversation between Moscoso and SCAD Museum of Art assistant curator Brittany Richmond. Richmond mentioned that Moscoso, a graduate of SCAD Atlanta, was visiting the university's Savannah campus for the first time, in connection with her exhibition.

A number of SCAD students and alumni inside the single-room gallery were Colombian. Seeing an old classmate across the room, Moscoso spontaneously exclaimed: "Oh my goodness, I know that guy!" She then acknowledged her sweetheart Scott Carter (B.F.A., painting, 2008). Richmond, laughing: "A lot of SCAD love happening here."

Returning to the work, Richmond challenged attendees: "Does anybody see sculpture or what you think of as sculpture in this room?" A couple tepid hands. "I think these works all have a sculptural presence, you can feel their physicality and the materiality in the room," the curator said.

Richmond wasn't wrong. The ceiling-hung works addressed but did not touch the walls. The laser-cut textiles featured serpentine embroidery both abstract and representative. The work told stories without dictating fixed narratives. The mandala-like complexity of "Entre camuflados" would've sent Rorschach into apoplexy.

On the floor, three video monitors showed Moscoso's adhesive hoofing in mud and glue. The artist explained the relevance.

"Dances are part of my practice," she said. "With my family, every time we meet it's a party. Dance becomes something normal. In Bogotá, we'd take the bus and the driver would be blasting salsa, so it's part of everyday life.

"Making this work, I was dancing to Celia Cruz. In the 1970s she was with Pacheco and all the Fania musicians in New York, playing cha-cha and mambo in all the clubs. In classic salsa, the male was the one who got the majority of the attention. The only woman among them was Celia Cruz, so the music I danced to all over my pieces with glue, and foil transfers, was Celia Cruz."

An immigrant to the United States, Moscoso has lived and worked in the U.S. for the past 14 years. She grew up during a time of unrest in Colombia, and it will be fascinating to see how her forthcoming work reflects Colombia's promising new political reality, including the recent election of President Gustavo Petro and Vice-President Francia Márquez, the first Afro-Colombian woman elected to high office.

One imagines she will continue to dance.

Dean Max Almy, School of Digital Media said, “Our programs in School of Digital Media are top rated in the world. Our alumni are working at Pixar, Disney, ILM, Blue Sky, Dreamworks and dozens of other great companies. It's no surprise hundreds of our alumni have worked on Academy Award winning and nominated films. We are so proud!"

SCAD students and alumni worked on the following Oscar-nominated films: 1917, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Ad Astra, Avengers: Endgame, Ford v Ferrari, Frozen II, Harriet, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Joker, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,  Marriage Story, Missing Link, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Richard Jewell, Rocketman, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Irishman, The Lighthouse, The Lion King, The Two Popes, and Toy Story 4.

Nearly one quarter of the alumni nominated graduated in the past four years. Furthermore, in a study of Spring 2018 SCAD graduates, 99 percent were employed, pursuing further education, or both within 10 months of graduation.

Audra Osborne: Party Cat time!

No time for naps: Audra Osborne (B.F.A., photography, 2011) stays busy in her adopted home base of Portland, Oregon. Founder of photo booth business Party Cat Events, Osborne also works for Photolucida, an arts nonprofit dedicated to promoting the work of emerging photographers.

SCAD: What inspired Party Cat Events?

AUDRA OSBORNE: I like to make things, and do a lot of paper crafts. I realized I could make a photo booth and run it myself. I started Party Cat in September 2015. The business really picked up this year, which makes me want to work even harder on it.

As for the name, I am definitely a cat lady. I like being home and I have a core group of friends, so for me to go into a social event business is pretty funny.

With Party Cat, I do everything small business owners do: accounting, marketing, props and backgrounds. My husband, Aaron Norberg (B.F.A., photography, 2011), also a SCAD grad, is my No. 1 unpaid intern.

SCAD: What goes into a Party Cat Event?

OSBORNE: I have standard props I bring and will make up to five new ones if people want something specific, like a hashtag. For my most recent wedding, I worked on a Hulk mask and an Iron Man mask. Some people have specific ideas and will show me a Pinterest board, while some will just send me their colors and tell me to run with it.

SCAD: How did you get involved with Photolucida?

OSBORNE: Photolucida is one of reasons I moved to Portland. It's an art and photography-heavy city, and I wanted to be in the same atmosphere SCAD provided, and have a support group.

I've worked with Photolucida for four years, first as a volunteer, then for a stipend. As program manager, I'm in charge of Critical Mass, an online photo competition whose goal is to provide exposure to emerging photographers. Along with marketing and administration, my job is to find over two hundred jurors who have access to or are able to give photographers opportunities including exhibitions, publications, introductions to collectors and features on photo-famous blogs. There are awards, always a good incentive.

SCAD: How did your SCAD education prepare you for your career?

OSBORNE: The facilities were amazing. Being able to use all types of cameras, scanners and darkrooms allows you to experiment with any type of photography you want. My professors were really key to my education. They were no-nonsense, and rather than being patted on the back their honest critiques shaped me going into the real world.

SCAD: What's one lesson you learned at SCAD that guides you in the professional world?

OSBORNE: Photography professor Rebecca Nolan told us to apply to the job you want and not the one you're necessarily qualified for. Women statistically don't apply to jobs because of that fear. She told us to tell future employers that you'll learn anything you need to know that you don't know already. I tried not be anxious starting my own business. I just dive in and do it.

If you watched this year's Academy Awards, you were witness to an unforgettable spectacle. This refers, not to the broadcast's improbable finale, but to what preceded it: the incredible, unmistakable presence of the creative contributions of SCAD alumni across a stunning spectrum of the nominated films.

As SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace enthused: "Over fifty astonishing SCAD alumni brought magic to the Academy Awards this year. What a WOW night! SCAD magic lit up the silver screen across so many categories, from ‘Zootopia' to ‘The Jungle Book' to the top prize for ‘Moonlight.' Oscar and Art the Bee, a match made in film heaven!"

At this year's 89th Academy Awards, SCAD alumni were nominated for their work on "Deepwater Horizon," "Doctor Strange," "Hidden Figures," "The Jungle Book," "Kubo and the Two Strings," "Moana," "Moonlight," "Passengers," "Piper," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and "Zootopia." Eleven of these alumni contributed their talents to more than one of these films. The diversity of these offerings is a testament to the exceptional preparation for professional careers these alumni received while students at SCAD, as implicitly acknowledged by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Academy is made up of approximately 7,000 filmmakers and film professionals, divided into 17 specific branches. These are the Academy members who vote for the Oscars, championing professionals from every facet of the business.

Recognized across 10 different categories, SCAD alumni contributed to nominees for best picture, animated feature film, cinematography, costume design, directing, film editing, production design, sound editing, visual effects, and last but not least, adapted screenplay. (As host Jimmy Kimmel put it: "Just because a screenplay is adapted, doesn't mean we love it any less.")

Congratulations to the following SCAD alumni, whose work has been seen and loved by millions of moviegoers, and rightly celebrated by their peers, the Academy, and the entire SCAD family.

5 Things I Learned at SCAD with Amanda Surowitz

It's no surprise students spend their whole time at SCAD learning and preparing for their creative careers, but learning goes beyond the classroom. As alumni, we looked back at what we've learned during our time here. This week, we have a list from Amanda Surowitz (B.F.A., writing).

Writing student Amanda Surowitz

  1. When you're respectful to everyone and give a fair, thorough critique of their work, whether or not you like each other becomes irrelevant. You can focus on the craft without worrying about hurting anyone's feelings.
  2. Just about everything has an ugly baby stage: a drawing, a short story, even your career. It's revolting and disheartening, but it doesn't last forever. The lines will create a form, the words will form an image, and you can move up from menial tasks. It just takes time.
  3. Save apologies for things you actually regret, which should never be your work or your opinion. Your presentation of either, however, is fair game.
  4. I decided on a writing degree thinking exactly what everyone told me: there are no stable, well-paying careers in writing. SCAD's been saying otherwise since my first day of class. Now I'm living proof that writers can be successful.
  5. You can spend the rest of your life fixing and refining any project; know when to call it quits before you sacrifice sleep and personal health.
