Supremely savvy style site Fashionista is currently assembling their annual list of the world's top fashion schools. If you're a SCAD alumnus with a degree in fashion, take a moment to make your voice heard. And if you're here familiarizing yourself with what the SCAD School of Fashion has to offer, read on.

At the undergraduate and graduate level, SCAD fashion students prepare to lead the ever-evolving world of fashion through a rigorous curriculum anchored by creative thinking and dynamic technology. Led by Michael Fink, dean for School of Fashion, and guided by professors with extensive industry experience, students explore fashion from the conceptual to the commercial, merging technical dexterity with personal vision to develop original fashion collections.

The SCAD School of Fashion offers degrees in accessory design, fashion, fashion marketing and management, and luxury and fashion management. SCAD offers related minors in menswear, fashion photography, fashion journalism, jewelry, fragrance marketing and management and more, allowing students to refine their focus and build expertise in their disciplines.

At SCAD, students converse with critics, designers, buyers and thought leaders like Imran Amed, Norma Kamali, Robin Givhan, Brandon Maxwell and Carolina Herrera who visit SCAD's global campuses to share their experience and insight. Each year, the Style Lab Mentor program affords SCAD fashion students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with established designers like Zac Posen, Catherine Malandrino, Stephen Burrows, Rachel Roy, Christian Siriano and Rafé Totengco. Students liaise with top industry professionals during signature events SCADstyle and SCAD FASHWKND, and the many unique workshops and critiques that bring fashion elite to the university.

In May 2017, at the inaugural SCAD FASHWKND, 43 students debuted their collections at a runway show in Savannah, held in the courtyard of the SCAD Museum of Art, featuring a recent installation by the internationally renowned Carlos Cruz-Diez. In Atlanta, the collections were displayed in tableaux vivants throughout the third floor of the university's main building. Both SCAD FASHWKND events featured a Shop The Runway retail component, where SCAD alumni shared and sold their designs.

In 2017, SCAD students won 20 YMA Fashion Scholarships, more than any other university in the history of the competition. SCAD graduates have won the Supima Design Competition for two consecutive years: In 2016 womenswear designer Jeffrey Taylor (B.F.A., fashion, 2016) earned the $10,000 grand prize in the 9th annual Supima Design Competition. He was invited to show his collection at Lincoln Center during NYFW, and later showed his collection during Paris Fashion Week. In 2015 SCAD alumna Kate McKenna-Schliep (B.F.A., fashion, 2015) won the Supima competition and showed her collection during Paris Fashion Week.

In Atlanta, SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film hosts exhibitions of work by world-renowned designers like Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, as well as historic compendiums including “Embellished: Adornment Through the Ages” and “Shoes: Pleasure and Pain.” To elucidate the themes of each exhibition, SCAD commissions complementary films that are screened in the adjacent SCAD FASH Film Salon. Students can further their studies through the SCAD FASH permanent collection, an archive of more than 1,000 museum quality garments from designers like Oscar de la Renta, Coco Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, Vera Wang, and Givenchy.

On display at SCAD FASH now through March 19, 2017, “Threads of History: Two Hundred Years Fashion” offers an unprecedented journey through womenswear, menswear and children’s ensembles from the Rococo era and the Belle Époque to the Roaring ’20s and the post-World War II New Look revolution. The exhibition illuminates society’s shifting values through the evolution of historic dress.

Over 70 rare European and American garments from the 18th through 20th centuries on display. The two oldest ensembles greet museumgoers at the exhibition entryway.

She wears a sack-back gown in brocade fabric with a floral pattern, silk tulle and lace sleeves from 1770. He wears an olive silk with embroidery in polychrome silks and a white silk satin vest with silver thread embroidery and metallic sequins from 1775. A closer look at the gown’s bustle shows that, in its prime, the garment was once a vibrant pink, though time has worn away its natural dyes.

The exhibition features artfully posed mannequins resting atop lit stages separated by ornate theatrical backdrops and props by SCAD painting professor Michael Brown (M.F.A., painting), associate dean of the School of Fine Arts Kent Knowles (B.F.A., painting, 1997) and Bryan Topczynski (M.F.A., historic preservation, 1996).

Original stop motion animations by SCAD associate chair of animation Matthew Maloney (M.F.A, animation, 2004; B.F.A, computer art, 2002) and motion media design professor Christina Maloney (M.F.A, broadcast design, 2008) accent the walls, bringing these mannequins to life.

Many of the garments on display appear courtesy of world-renowned Italian fashion professor and collector Raffaello Piraino, whose collection, housed in Palermo, Italy, consists of more than 5,000 garments and accessories that belonged to the Sicilian aristocracy and bourgeoisie. Notable items from the SCAD Permanent Collection punctuate the exhibition.

"Threads of History: Two Hundred Years of Fashion" is curated by Rafael Gomes, SCAD director of fashion exhibitions, with assistance from Luca Lo Sicco, SCAD professor of fashion marketing and management. Admission to the museum is free for museum members, and all SCAD students, faculty, staff with a SCAD CARD. "Threads of History: Two Hundred Years of Fashion" runs concurrently with "Embellished: Adornment Through the Ages." Both exhibitions are open to the public with the cost of museum admission.

At the front entrance of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta, white-coat-clad student docents are eager to lead guests through the experience of the museum’s newest exhibition: a journey through 200 years of fashion. Now on display through January 29th, 2017, "Embellished: Adornment Through the Ages," is a chronicle of European and American fashion represented by hats, accessories and curios. It is the first SCAD FASH exhibition to focus exclusively on the evolution of fashion.

Guests begin their tour through the mysterious and romantically lit hallway, leading to the prominent display of the exhibition’s first piece: an Yves Saint Laurent rooster feather bolero jacket, circa 1970. From there, guests wind through a survey of adornment, from the lavish embellishments of the mid-18th century and the Belle Époque, to the sophisticated elegance of the years during and following the world wars.

Mystically lit to give each piece the illusion of suspension, headwear — such as a 1830s Florentine high drawn straw bonnet, a 1920s felt helmet cloche with silk embroidery and an early 20th century military felucca hat — are featured with a host of other accessories.

Interchangeable shoe buckles from the early 1700s, ornate parasols and a finger stretcher for shaping leather gloves catch the eye while strolling through the ages. Vintage magazines, a miniature fashion doll and numerous other historically significant pieces from the SCAD Permanent Collection complement these treasures, providing extensive insight into economic, cultural and political fashion history.

In addition to the captivating array of styles by Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli, the House of Balenciaga, and French fashion icon Christian Dior, nearly all of the items on view appear courtesy of world-renowned Italian fashion professor and collector Raffaello Piraino.

This momentous exhibition marks the U.S. debut of selected pieces from the legendary Raffaello Piraino Collection. Housed in Palermo, Italy, the collection consists of more than 5,000 ornate garments and accessories that belonged to the Sicilian aristocracy and bourgeoisie.

"Embellished: Adornment Through the Ages" is curated by Rafael Gomes, SCAD director of fashion exhibitions, with assistance from Luca Lo Sicco, SCAD professor of fashion marketing and management. Admission to the museum is free for museum members, and all SCAD students, faculty, staff with a SCAD CARD. Open to the public with the cost of museum admission.

Alumna earns her stripes with SCAD FASH zebra sculpture

What’s black and white and seen at SCAD FASH? A much-ballyhooed, life-size zebra created by SCAD alumna Emily Nelms Perez (B.F.A., painting)! The zebra stands amid a selection of dazzling garments at the “Carolina Herrera: Refined Irreverence” exhibition at SCAD FASH, adding whimsy to the show while accentuating the couture.

SCAD: What was your approach to creating the sculpture?

EMILY NELMS PEREZ: My first thought was that I was actually a little nervous to do the project because my personal work is figurative, contemporary sculpture. Carolina Herrera was showing a collection of her black-and-white gowns, and SCAD wanted a zebra to accompany the exhibition. I approached the project by trying to make a zebra that would complement the dresses in the best way.

SCAD: How did you design the sculpture?

PEREZ: I built my forms in Rhinoceros 3D, and from there I took it into a program called Pepakura, which is used mainly by gamers to create gaming suits. I used that program to cut up the model and create puzzle pieces and lay them out on sheets of cardboard. Then I set it up back into Rhinoceros to be prepped for laser cutting.

It also went through Adobe Illustrator. In Illustrator, I coded the lines to let the laser know what to do. I coded each line to be either a mountain line or a valley line, depending on what kind of fold I needed. Ideally, when you get your files back from your laser cutter, you have hundreds of puzzle pieces with all the lines marked properly.

SCAD: What materials did you use?

PEREZ: With commissions and public art, the goal is to make it as big as possible, but light and durable, too. It’s like building a very large 3-D puzzle. The interior is half hollow and half solid. From the shoulder of the animal to the belly and the legs, it’s all solid, with wooden dowels.

The zebra is made of paper and cardboard. I covered it with a non-toxic, water-based resin five times. That material creates a cement-like compound on the surface and solidifies the paper on the inside. If you touch the zebra, it feels solid. It’s pretty strong and super lightweight.

SCAD: What was it like seeing your work at the opening?

PEREZ: It was with a great sense of pride. I love working with SCAD — they’re so good to their students!

“Carolina Herrera: Refined Irreverence” is on view at SCAD FASH through September 25, and through September 4 at SCAD Museum of Art.

Happy new year from SCAD! Our first big 2016 announcement: SCAD FASH will feature Daniel Lismore, "London's most outrageous dresser," in his first U.S. exhibition, entitled "Be Yourself; Everyone else is already taken," on Jan. 22. Just as exciting is Jonathan Becker's fashion photography exhibition "A Fashionable Mind," also opening at SCAD FASH on Jan. 22.

Before we dive into more new year announcements, let’s take a look at what made 2015 monumental. It was a year of firsts, incredible lectures and presentations and prestigious awards.

Here are 15 great SCAD moments from 2015:

1. The First Hong Kong Fashion Showcase

As the city of Hong Kong quickly becomes one of the world’s fashion capitals, it comes to no surprise that SCAD’s talented fashion students began showcasing their work in Hong Kong during January of 2015. Major brand executives attended the inaugural show: Polo Ralph Lauren, DKNY and Shanghai Tang.

2. aTVFest

The third year of the festival included many talented faces from fan-favorite TV shows. With workshops and panels, the honorees included Timothy Hutton, Terrence Howard and the entire cast of ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder.”

3. deFINE Art

After 10 years, Chinese artist Xu Bing returned to SCAD as the keynote speaker for this event as his exhibition, “Things Are Not What They First Appear” showcased at SCAD Museum of Art.

4. SCAD Style

Designers and creative influencers came to Savannah, Atlanta and Hong Kong for a weeklong series of panel discussions and workshops. Students had face-to-face time with the likes of Lauren Bush Lauren, Meagan Cignoli, Jennifer Fisher and Alexander Wang.

5. Equestrian team celebrates triple championship win

SCAD’s continually winning equestrian team made history as the only team to win the following titles in the same year: the American National Riding Commission (ANRC) National Championship, Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championship and Tournament of Champions (TOC) series.

6. SCAD Fashion Show

The 2015 André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award went to fashion icon Dame Vivienne Westwood. After receiving the honor, Westwood sat front row during the student showcase to witness the talented designs of our top senior collections.

7. The graduate fashion program ranks No. 1

SCAD came out on top as the No. 1 graduate fashion program in the U.S. according to London-based Business of Fashion.

8. High employment rate for graduating students

According to a SCAD institutional effectiveness survey of 2014 alumni, 97 percent of graduates were employed, pursuing higher education or both within 10 months of commencement.

9. SCAD ranks high within the universities of Americas and Europe

Red Dot Design named SCAD among the top four universities in the Americas and Europe. Throughout the year, our students also brought home seven Red Dot Awards

10. SCAD FASH a Museum of Fashion and Film

October 2015 brought the historic opening of the first southeastern fashion museum within the U.S. The inaugural exhibition, “Oscar de la Renta,” showcased over 80 garments within the newly up-cycled space and welcomed more than 10,500 visitors during its time.

11. 18th Year of Savannah Film Festival

This year showed the most documentaries throughout the festival’s history, as well as showcasing mostly films with female leads. The honorees included Meg Ryan, Olivia Wilde, Saoirse Ronan and Alfie Allen.

12. DesignIntelligence ranked SCAD’s Interior Design Program No. 1

It’s the fifth consecutive year for SCAD’s undergraduate interior design program to be ranked as No.1 and the third year for SCAD’s graduate interior design program to be ranked No. 1 by DesignIntelligence.

13. SCAD provides a faster track to architecture

Chosen by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), SCAD architecture students can proceed from education to licensure in as few as seven years.

14. Google and SCAD create a new User Experience Design degree

Putting students at the forefront of this emerging discipline, the new degree is the first of its kind in the country. Google will continue to be a valuable resource, holding annual workshops and introducing collaborative projects through SCAD’s Collaborative Learning Center, and instituting a mentorship program for students.

15. Talented SCAD Students and Alumni

The reputation of our students and alumni continued throughout the year of 2015. To name a few: Zach Prengler (B.F.A., film and television) worked as production assistant on the summer blockbuster Jurassic World; Kate McKenna-Schliep (B.F.A., fashion) won the eighth annual Supima Design Competition; Max Bickley (B.F.A., visual effects) served as the Lighting Technical Director for The Good Dinosaur.
