In some cases, certain students are selected for verification by the federal government when a Free Application for Federal Student Aid is filed. Students are notified via email and in MySCAD if they have been selected for verification. During verification, the financial aid office is required to confirm information on the student's FAFSA and there may be additional requirements on the student.

If you were selected for verification, please read the following instructions carefully to avoid a delay in processing your aid.

I've been selected for verification. What should I do?

Many students selected for verification are chosen randomly. However in some cases, students are selected for verification if the information they provided on the FAFSA was inconsistent, if their FAFSA was incomplete, or if their FAFSA contained estimated information.

If you are selected for verification, you will need to complete and submit any requirements listed in the email notification.

How do I complete verification?

Some of the requirements for verification can be completed electronically, while others may require you to work directly with your adviser to complete.

Once you complete the required steps for verification, the information you submitted is compared to the information submitted on your FAFSA. This review can take up to two weeks, depending on the time of year.

If no discrepancies are found and your information is confirmed, your financial aid will be processed and you will receive a financial aid award letter. The award letter will outline the financial aid you can expect to receive for the upcoming academic year.

If discrepancies are found between your FAFSA and the verification information supplied, SCAD will notify you via email that clarification is needed. Financial aid will not be awarded until verification is completed. If financial aid has already been awarded, it will not be disbursed until all issues are resolved.

If verification cannot be completed before the end of the quarter, you could lose eligibility for some types of financial aid for that quarter. Generally, financial aid cannot be awarded or disbursed after the end of the award year. It is imperative to submit any supporting documentation in a timely manner to avoid losing out on any financial aid funds.

What happens if I do not provide the verification information requested?

If you do not provide the verification documentation, you are not eligible for federal financial aid. You also are ineligible for many forms of financial aid that your college may have to offer.

SCAD will notify the Office of the Inspector General if fraud is suspected.

Contact your adviser if you have any questions or concerns regarding the verification process.

Did you submit an amended tax return?

If you amended your tax return, you must also submit a signed IRS Form 1040X tax return, in addition to your tax return transcript, to complete verification.

Financial aid funding is considered estimated and is subject to change until confirmed by the funding entity or until finds are received.

Did you request a time extension on your tax return?

If you have requested a filing extension, you must submit a copy of the completed application for automatic extension of time to file U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, IRS Form 4868, along with the following documentation:

  • Verification worksheet
  • W-2s from all wage earners
  • Self-employed persons must provide a signed statement of their adjusted gross income and taxes paid.
