Where are classes held?

In Savannah, SCAD Rising Star students will attend classes in various SCAD buildings depending on the courses in which they have enrolled. In Atlanta SCAD Rising Star courses are held in the main building and the SCAD Digital Media Center.

Are there accommodations for disabled students?

Yes. SCAD offers educational services that provide equal opportunity for people with disabilities. Students will work with the office of counseling and student support services in order to set up accommodations.


Application

What is SCAD looking for in an applicant?

SCAD is looking for highly motivated and dedicated rising high school seniors to participate in SCAD Rising Star. The program is extremely rigorous and students work at an accelerated pace. Grades for the program are included on a student's official college transcript.

What are the application requirements?

In addition to the completed online application and US$60 nonrefundable application fee, applicants must submit official high school transcripts through first semester of their junior year. For students whose first language is not English, proof of English proficiency must be provided. Supplemental materials may be submitted, which can include a visual portfolio of at least 10 pieces, a statement of purpose, a list of achievements, one letter of recommendation, or official report of SAT or ACT scores (optional for SCAD Rising Star but required for freshman admission after the fall 2021 quarter).

When is it too late to apply?

There is no official application deadline to apply for SCAD Rising Star. Students are encouraged to apply at least 30 days before the start of the program. The earlier a student applies, the more time they will have to complete their admission file before the payment deadline (located below). The online application, application fee, and all supporting documents are required to complete a file for admission.

When is the program deposit due?

The deadline for the SCAD Rising Star program deposit is Friday, June 4, 2021. You may submit payment online

When are tuition, housing, and meal fees due?

Any remaining balance, including tuition, housing, and meal fees, is due Friday, June 4, 2021.

I attended the program last year. Can I reapply?

Only rising high school seniors can participate in the SCAD Rising Star program. The program may not be attended twice.

When will I be notified of an admission decision?

All applicants are notified within two to three weeks after completing the application file.


Financial

Are payment plans available?

All payment options can be discussed with the admission adviser assigned upon application.

How much do books and course materials cost?

Supply expenses vary by course. A list of supplies is provided with the course syllabus, which is located in Blackboard via MySCAD, and supplies may be purchased at the SCAD bookstore upon arrival.

Will participating in SCAD Rising Star help me get into SCAD?

Students who participate in SCAD Rising Star will gain valuable academic experience, build their portfolio, and refine their skills under the guidance and instruction of SCAD faculty. Satisfactory completion of SCAD Rising Star with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher may qualify students for admission to SCAD for further undergraduate study if they have submitted all required first-time freshman application materials.

What is the cancellation/refund policy?

The application and program fees are nonrefundable. The Rising Star cancellation/refund policy follows the official policy and schedule for SCAD summer quarter, which can be found online


Residence life

If I am under 18, may I live in a residence hall?

As long as an applicant qualifies as a rising senior, they may reside in the residence hall.

May I check into the residence hall before the check-in dates?

Early check-in is not permitted. Students should call the SCAD Rising Star office to confirm availability before any flight arrangements are made.

Are sheets, towels, pillows, and toilet paper supplied?

No. Students need to bring their own toiletries and linens. There will be additional weekend shopping excursions available to students who need essentials.

How much supervision is provided?

Several SCAD pre-college assistants, resident assistants, and a residence director stay in the residence hall with students. SCAD pre-college assistants have residence life experience and training. They enforce SCAD policies and assist students during the program.

Do I need to bring my computer?

Students have access to the computer lab but are encouraged to bring a personal computer.

Can I bring my car?

SCAD Rising Star students may drive to SCAD in their cars but use of a car is not permitted during the program. Violation of this rule may result in immediate expulsion from the program. Bikes are welcome.

Do I need spending money?

Yes. Each student is responsible for their class supplies and should bring money for activities outside of the program.

Is there a vegetarian meal option?

Yes. The SCAD dining hall offers a variety of food served cafeteria-style, including special dietary options. Students with special dietary needs should alert the SCAD Rising Star staff ahead of time so dining services can be advised and plan accordingly.

Will there be someone to meet me at the airport?

Yes. An admission staff member and SCAD bus will be waiting at the airport for all students who have signed up for airport pickup. A SCAD pre-college assistant and an admission staff member will ride on the SCAD bus with all students to the residence hall.

If I am late for check-in, where do I go?

A resident assistant and/or pre-college assistant will be available to assist with late check-in. Let the SCAD Rising Star office know you will be arriving after regular check-in.

Is there a dress code?

No. Students should keep in mind that buildings are air conditioned and may be cooler than the temperature outside. Students should also remember that in certain classes they may be working with materials that stain. Additionally, some classes will require closed-toe shoes so students should plan accordingly. Many students choose to bring a casual dress outfit (e.g., slacks/skirt and collared shirt, dress, etc.) to wear to the closing exhibition.

SCAD Atlanta

Where are workshops and classes held?

SCAD Rising Star students will attend classes in various SCAD buildings depending on the courses in which they've enrolled. SCAD Atlanta classes are held in the main building and the SCAD Digital Media Center.

What kinds of activities can I participate in?

SCAD Rising Star features a variety of activities to build community among students and help them become familiar with SCAD and local resources. Sample trips include visits to local museums, galleries, and parks. Students may choose to participate in optional off-campus weekend activities as well.

Residence halls

If I am from Atlanta or the surrounding area, am I still permitted to live in the residence hall?

Yes. Students are encouraged to live in the residence hall to participate in the full undergraduate experience, including planned activities and extracurricular events.

Are there telephones in the rooms?

All rooms have telephone outlets, but students must bring a telephone and cord.

Is there security in the residence hall?

Security guards are posted at the residence hall entrance 24 hours a day, and at all SCAD buildings when open. A current SCAD ID card is required for access into any SCAD building/residence hall.

May I be away from the residence hall overnight?

Students may be checked out of the residence hall by a parent. If someone other than the parent will be checking the student out, the student must alert his or her resident assistant and get written permission from the parent/guardian. Students must notify their resident assistant and residence director at least 24 hours prior to checkout time.

Where should people send mail or packages?

Students are notified electronically at their SCAD student email address when packages and mail arrives. Hours for pickup are posted in the residence hall.

SCAD Savannah

What kinds of activities can I participate in?

SCAD Rising Star features a variety of activities to build community among students and help them become familiar with SCAD and local resources. Activities have included kayaking excursions, visits to the beach, baseball games, and dance nights. Additionally, pre-college assistants coordinate a variety of academic workshops to assist students in further exploring their artistry. Students may choose to participate in optional weekend excursions for an additional fee.

Residence halls

If I am from Savannah or the surrounding area, am I still permitted to live in the residence hall?

No, rooms at The Hive do not have telephones or telephone outlets.

Is there security in the residence hall?

Security guards are posted at the entrance to The Hive 24 hours a day and at all SCAD buildings when open. Additionally, there will be security guards posted in each of the residence halls and patrolling the grounds overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. A current SCAD ID card is required for access into any SCAD building/residence hall.

May I be away from the residence hall overnight?

Students may be checked out of the residence hall by a parent/guardian with proper prior documentation and approval. If someone other than the parent/guardian will be checking the student out, the student must alert his or her SCAD pre-college assistant and get written permission from the parent/guardian. Overnight absence forms are available upon request and are subject to approval.

Where should people send mail or packages for SCAD Rising Star students?

SCAD Rising Star students can receive general mail and packages during the program. Students are notified electronically at their SCAD student email address when mail and packages are available to be picked up. Hours for pickup are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. SCAD Rising Star students may begin receiving mail/packages on Sunday, June 13, 2021. Items sent prior to that date will not be accepted.
