Discover the 'Dimensions of Dante' in group discussion
Discover the many dimensions of Dante Alighieri and his widespread cultural influence. This group discussion will address the history, artistic reception and literary presence of Dante in African and African-American art and culture.
Nancy E. Emmeluth, professor of liberal arts, will address the reception of Dante by African-Americans in American history, including the reasons for his position as a "hero" figure in African-American literature.
Weihua Zhang, professor of liberal arts, will explore Dante’s “The Divine Comedy” in relation to the novel "Linden Hills" by acclaimed African-American writer Gloria Naylor.
Edwin Johnson, professor of art history, will discuss works of art in the exhibition as visual representations of cosmologies, making connections between African art-making traditions and contemporary practices.
The discussion is free and open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the public.
