SCAD AT MIAMI: Cory Imig, Christopher Paul Dean and Britt Spencer
SCAD Art Sales presents an installation of alumni artists Cory Imig (B.F.A., fibers, 2008), Christopher Paul Dean (M.F.A., sculpture, 2016) and Britt Spencer (professor of illustration; M.F.A., painting, 2011; B.F.A., illustration, 2005) at Untitled, Miami Beach. The space joins three artists who use vibrant color, pattern and crisp line as primary elements in their compositions. These elements nod to the artistic interests of Carlos Cruz-Diez, whose exhibition “Chroma” is presented by the SCAD Museum of Art in collaboration with Articruz and the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation as an Untitled, Miami Beach Special Project. SCAD is the official university partner of Untitled, Miami Beach.
Imig’s work is rooted in explorations of the temporal and ephemeral. Exhibited at the fair are her "Site Proposals," screen shots of randomized locations on Google-Earth upon which the artist collages colorful paper pieces suggestive of large-scale land art projects. Additionally, Imig creates a site-responsive installation of helium-inflated balloons tethered by tape, resulting in a work that shifts slowly over the course of the fair from tense to collapsed.
Concerned with notions of the familiar and commonplace, Dean transforms utilitarian materials like walking safety tread to question our relationships with everyday objects. His work straddles the line between sculpture and painting. Presented at the fair are configurations of recycled rubber parking blocks. The artist converts these ready-made, three-dimensional objects into wall-hanging works that reference hard-edged abstract painting traditions.
Spencer creates paintings that reflect his experiences as nonsensical narratives, featuring the exploits of emphatic characters in absurdist situations. Using humor as a means to discuss dark subject matter, Spencer paints exaggerated figures in vibrant color, referencing animation, cartoons and comics. The majority of his painting surfaces are screen-printed onto panels, a reference to the visual vocabulary of comic books.
