Combine tribal belief systems and sci-fi with artist Rose B. Simpson
Rose B. Simpson joins SCAD Museum of Art curator DJ Hellerman from her studio on the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico for a conversation about the artist’s use of pottery techniques, her explorations of automotive design, and her spiritual origins.
Simpson is a member of the Pueblo tribe and was born on the Santa Clara Pueblo, a site where her people have dwelled for thousands of years and where she continues to live and work. Her practice is informed by the Indigenous nation’s historic production of clay pottery and its distinct methods of firing and formation. In Countdown, a major new commission presented in the SCAD MOA Jewel Boxes, Simpson combines her inherited tribal belief systems with high art concepts and apocalyptic science-fiction forms.
