Welcome

Photography is a persuasive, powerful medium with a rich history of contributing to cultural knowledge and enabling people to communicate their ideas. Photographers create images for a variety of contexts ranging from commercial to journalism to fine art. Powerful photographs, regardless of intended context, share in common an excellence of design and craft and compelling content/concepts.

SCAD has one of the most comprehensive photography programs in the United States, offering a broad range of specialized courses and electives across digital, analog and historic photographic processes. Students develop fluency with a variety of camera systems, digital workflow, color and black-and-white technique, and both studio and location lighting.

Students are guided by faculty mentors in tailoring their course of study through elective coursework, independent study, internships, and/or extracurricular activities and student groups. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, students work toward the goal of achieving a personal vision and a highly developed degree of visual literacy. SCAD also offers the only fully online M.A. program in digital photography.

Equipment includes Macintosh computers, Adobe CS software, Imacon scanners, and wide-format inkjet printers. A Durst Theta printer in Atlanta and an Epsilon in Savannah enable students to expose and process RA-4 photographic materials from digital files using the worldwide standard for museum-quality printing. Students use professional lighting equipment, medium- and large-format cameras, digital camera backs, an alternative processes lab and private darkrooms.

The SCAD Museum of Art houses the Shirrel Rhoades  photography collection, which includes iconic examples of works by significant 19th- and 20th-century photographers such as Mathew Brady, Nadar, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Adams, Robert Mapplethorpe, Man Ray, Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham.

The department hosts an annual portfolio review festival for students with industry creatives and professionals.
