Interior designers identify, research and creatively solve problems pertaining to the function, safety and quality of interior environments.
SCAD offers one of the largest and most professionally-engaged interior design programs in the United States. Students benefit from the expertise of full-time faculty who hold terminal degrees in the field and who share a common belief that a holistic educational framework guides future professional development and inspires lifelong learning.
The interior design program challenges students to become innovative designers who are capable of critical thinking and effective communication. Professional ethics and values are stressed within the context of social, environmental and global design practice.
Projects include commercial, residential and institutional design and address a wide range of behavioral, environmental, decorative and technical issues. Social responsibility and sustainability are emphasized.
SCAD interior design students work with electronic design software including AutoCAD, Microstation, Adobe Master Collection, 3D Studio VIZ, SURFCAM, and Autodesk Maya and Revit. A fully integrated intranet system offers online help, shared drive space, downloadable 3-D models, building use maps and access to online resources and databases.
In the B.F.A. program, students gain a strong foundation in drawing, design and technology, and also study design history, human responses to the environment, construction, finishing materials and technology, furnishings, lighting, building codes, barrier-free design, sustainable/green design and professional practices.
The M.A. degree is for those who wish to gain knowledge of design theory and the interior design profession with an emphasis on emerging materials, human response and environmental systems.
The M.F.A. is a terminal degree that emphasizes design inquiry, in-depth investigation and communication for students who wish to enter the professional practice and/or earn the credentials to teach at the college level.
The interior design program leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, 206 Grandville Ave., Suite 350, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503.
