Put on a headset and encounter the latest in virtual reality. Participants will have access to HTC Vive, Oculus and Samsung Gear devices. Pass holders must sign up to choose a session to attend when they reserve their passes. You must be on time for your session or it will be transferred to guests on the waiting list.

Plan, Shoot, Repeat: Meet Milo

The Milo motion control rig is an award-winning portable system used for precise camera operation. With an impressive range of articulation, the Milo allows for precise and repeatable camera movement, making the impossible possible and saving a tremendous amount of time on shoot day. Join Sumptuous Media for a live demonstration on how the company uses Milo to create beautiful and seamless cinematography, stop-motion and 3-D work for commercial and film projects.

Bringing Pixels to the Real World

Blurred Lines: The Mixed Media Landscape of Tomorrow

The fundamentals of storytelling never change: Strong characters, engaging plots and emotional relevancy persist. The methods and options for telling those stories, however, have evolved. From USB drives left in bathroom stalls to mobile phones baked into birthday cakes, dive into the world of immersive storytelling with a top creative in the field. Get an insider's view into the most successful alternate reality games in history, and learn how the art form relates to the mixed media storytelling landscape of tomorrow.

Hidden Magic: Visual Effects in Film and Television

Presented by: Chris LeDoux, founder and visual effects supervisor, Crafty Apes; Drew Sawyer, partner and postproduction producer, Moonshine Post-Production

Visual effects in movies typically conjure images of superheroes scaling skyscrapers or ghostly phantoms lurking in old Victorian mansions. However, some of the best visual effects are what you don't see, forcing you to reappraise what you know to be real. Learn from the VFX artists behind films like "La La Land" and "Hidden Figures" about the unseen magic of visual effects in some of the most popular films and television series.

Merging Reality

Take a first-ever look at an exciting technology available only on the new HTC Vive Pro headset. Merging reality blurs the lines between reality, AR and VR for seamless gameplay and immersive content. The initial game is revealed to be a ruse before the player is encouraged to literally step through a portal, crossing over from an AR experience to a VR experience, where the gameplay continues.

Virtual Canvas: Painting From a New Perspective

Presented by: Estella Tse, Tilt Brush artist in residence, Google; Cesar "3Donimus" Ortega, Tilt Brush artist in residence, Google

Virtual reality allows you to experience astonishing things, from exploring new galaxies, saving the world and painting vistas with trails of stars. With Google Tilt Brush, artists can paint in 3-D space with life-size brush strokes of light and fire. Experience painting like you've never seen before as a virtual masterpiece is created live at SCAD ForwardFest.

A World Without Boundaries: The Art of Visual Effects in Film

Presented by: Chris White, visual effects supervisor, Weta Digital

Join award-winning visual effects supervisor Chris White as he takes you on a journey through the creation of the post-apocalyptic world of "Maze Runner: The Death Cure," the fantastical universe of "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" and the critically acclaimed "Planet of the Apes" trilogy. From concept to creation, White takes you behind the scenes to reveal how these and other worlds are brought to life for the big screen.

Mixing Reality: Designing Experiences for the HoloLens

Presented by: Daniel Plemmons, senior interaction designer, Microsoft HoloLens
Location: SCADshow, Stage 2

Microsoft HoloLens is the first self-contained, holographic computer, enabling you to engage with your digital content and interact with holograms in the world around you. HoloLens senior interaction designer and SCAD alumnus Daniel Plemmons (B.F.A., interactive design and game development, 2011) leads a captivating presentation on creating experiences for Microsoft's mixed reality technologies. Attendees get a chance to see HoloLens mixed reality experiences up close.

Storytelling in New Realms

Presented by: David Karlak, creative director, Nurulize; director, "Alien Covenant: In Utero"
Location: SCADshow, Mainstage

Filmmaker David Karlak (B.F.A., film and television, 2010) has been dubbed the "worldwide guru of VR" by Wired magazine thanks in part to his work with 20th Century Fox's FoxNext VR Studio to direct "Alien Covenant: In Utero" for Ridley Scott. Join this SCAD alumnus as he discusses how his love for storytelling led him to explore new methods and languages in film, and the work he is doing to help create new tools and software for the virtual reality revolution.

A failing space station threatens the peaceful planet Alpha, home to species from a thousand planets. Major Valerian and his partner Sergeant Laureline must find a way to save the planet and the future of the universe.

Closing Screening: Black Maria Film Festival

Location: SCADshow, Mainstage

Since 1981, the Black Maria Film Festival has been celebrating and preserving the diversity, invention and vitality of the short film. The festival, based at New Jersey City University, is named after Thomas Edison's original film studio dubbed the "Black Maria" because of its resemblance to the black-box police paddy wagons of the same name. This international juried film competition features genres including narrative, experimental, animation and documentary. Enjoy a unique screening that pushes the boundaries of film in this block of shorts curated expressly for SCAD ForwardFest.
