Explore materials in context at Natural Fibers and Dyes in Contemporary Design workshop

Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019

Miami Beach, FL

Design Miami/

Convention Center Drive and 19th Street

How are contemporary artists using natural fibers and dyes, and what can they learn from ancient traditions? In this workshop and conversation moderated by Cayewah Easley, chair of SCAD fibers, join designers Fernando Laposse, Angela Damman, and Jacobo Mendoza as they speak to the influence of Indigenous techniques and materials on their contemporary design practices.

Mendoza, a Oaxaca-based Zapotec master weaver, will lead a hands-on workshop that focuses on cochineal dye and its incredible properties. Participants will create a small sisal object with Laposse and explore the dyeing process with Mendoza. SCAD students Devin Boyle (M.F.A. fibers), Tori Myers (B.F.A. fibers), and Haileigh Fiske (B.F.A. fibers) will also be on hand to share their expertise in natural dyes, materials, and processes, and answer questions about the elite SCAD fibers program, the largest in the U.S.

This workshop is free and open to Design Miami/ guests. Purchase tickets to Design Miami/ at designmiami.com.
