Sarah Palmer thesis exhibition: 'The Danse'

SCAD presents "The Danse," a thesis exhibition by Sarah Palmer (M.F.A. painting). The artist uses images of ballet dancers as a launching point to create brightly colored, layered, abstract paintings. Palmer’s thesis work explores the idea of "essence." The artist searches for what lies behind the immediate to discover the true nature of her subjects. Much like Plato’s "Allegory of the Cave," images can be thought of as constructs, leaving the truth to be discovered.

Through the abstraction of dancers and the fabrication of the works through collage, Palmer seeks to enable viewers to see beyond the image, to experience the dancer’s dreams, discipline and dedication. With complex compositions of diagonals and arching lines that defy the laws of perspective, Palmer provides movement and energy as the dancers appear to move across the stage.

Reception: Thursday, Nov. 8, 5–7 p.m.

This exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
