Reception for Hwahyun Kim exhibition: 'In Between Dreams and Reality'
Join us for a reception celebrating "In Between Dreams and Reality," a thesis exhibition by Hwahyun Kim (M.F.A. painting) showcasing works that combine fastidiously drawn ink motifs with blocks of color or translucent layers of thin, gestural paint.
On view Thursday, Jan. 18, through Friday, Feb. 2, "Between Dreams" was inspired by vivid nightmares of being chased or bound that Hwahyun Kim had as a child. With a keen interest in this liminal space between waking life and the subconscious, she creates surreal landscapes inhabited by humans, animals and lush, flowering vegetation. Her work also incorporates hyper-realistic sections of narrative imagery, executed in precise pen drawings, with indistinct boundaries or voids conflating the space between reality and imagination.
Hwahyun Kim earned a B.A. and an M.F.A. in painting from Dongguk University in her native Seoul, South Korea. She has had solo exhibitions at the New South Gallery & Studios in Statesville, North Carolina, and Spruill Gallery in Dunwoody, Georgia, and has participated in group exhibitions across the U.S. and South Korea.
"Between Dreams" is curated by Ben Tollefson, assistant curator of SCAD exhibitions.
Gallery hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
