Two-year residential requirement

All new first-time, full-time, first-year students enrolled in on-ground courses are required to live in university housing for their first two academic years (i.e., through the end of the spring quarter of their sophomore year).*

About the policy

SCAD introduced its two-year residential requirement in Fall 2025 for the Class of 2029, following research showing that students who live on campus have fewer absences, higher GPAs, and higher graduation rates. On-campus living provides convenient access to academic workshops, wellness programs, transportation services, and a supportive community that helps students thrive.

Exemptions

Students seeking an exemption from the two-year residential requirement, including students who plan to live with family in the local area, may submit a request for consideration. Exemption requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the student’s first quarter of enrollment.

To submit a housing exemption, visit MySCAD > SCAD life page > My housing channel > "Housing exemption request form" link.

Submitting an exemption does not guarantee approval. Do not make other housing plans until your exemption request has been processed.

*At SCAD, a student is considered a sophomore if they are in their second year at SCAD after beginning as a first-time, full-time, first-year student the year prior.
