Talk process and progress with artists Sanford Biggers and Emily Furr
In this idea-driven, two-part event, acclaimed conceptual artist and 2021 deFINE ART honoree Sanford Biggers joins SCAD Museum of Art adjunct curator Humberto Moro for a discussion and Q&A about his solo exhibition Contra/Diction at the museum’s Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies.
Then, stay tuned as artist and SCAD graduate Emily Furr (B.F.A., graphic design, 2000) speaks with curator DJ Hellerman about the creative process, navigating her career as an emerging artist, and her first solo museum exhibition, Star Tap.
Biggers’ exhibition Contra/Diction brings together works from the past 20 years of his practice. Beyond its compelling visual potency, Biggers’ work is a visceral experience and a call to combat racial injustices that threaten the lives of Black Americans. His works are a cleaving of references from myriad domains including European Modernism, traditional African sculpture, Buddhism, and the American histories of the Underground Railroad and the Black Power movement. Furr paints celestial visions that place cool, hard-edged objects within weightless, star-filled voids. Her serialized tropes take the shape of tongues laden with hallucinogenic sugar cubes, sloping conveyor belts adorned with astral points, rocket engines with acutely sharp, almost erotic edges, tubes, chains, and myriad metal hardware. Charging her objects with a sensual, bodiless power, Furr reveals both forms and the void that surrounds them as anthropomorphic depictions of human relations. Follow @emilyfurr on Instagram.
