Thomas Satcher exhibition: 'Palindrome'
SCAD presents "Palindrome," an exhibition by Thomas Satcher (M.F.A., animation, 2018). The exhibition presents the artist’s investigations into the combination of classical sculptural methods and modern technologies. Satcher’s work is motivated by dissolving complex concepts into approachable figurative artwork, leading viewers to questions of humanity's relationships with technology and machines.
Much of the work in the exhibition is crafted from traditional materials such as bronze, ceramic, plaster and wood, but the artist’s latest works include 3-D-printed "glitched" figures. In order to produce these figures, Satcher developed a method of art-making that incorporates digital art, classical sculpture, industrial design and production. Each object begins as a hand-crafted sculpture. The artist then implements digital sculpting tools and techniques, including 3-D laser scanning of the sculpture, modifying the scanned model using 3-D sculpting software, 3-D printing the modified model and, finally, altering and integrating the 3-D printed object into a sculptural composition. Through this integration of techniques and technologies, Satcher explores the unique benefits, challenges and opportunities for expression inherent in each phase of the creation method.
The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
