Join us for a reception celebrating Pierre Mendell’s exhibition “At First Sight.”

"At First Sight" presents an exhibition of selected posters, books, brochures and design concepts by Pierre Mendell (1929-2008), who was one of the world’s leading graphic designers. For almost 30 years, Mendell played a key role in creating the visual identity of Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. Mendell’s posters became prominent in advertising columns and billboards around Munich, including designs for Die Neue Sammlung exhibitions and advertisements for the Bavarian State Opera.

Reductive forms and bold use of color characterize Mendell’s designs. He said, "I look for simple communicative solutions, as I am aware that our world is flooded by an overabundance of pictures and that a simple, direct solution might get the message across better. At first sight, so to speak." "At First Sight" includes more than 40 examples of his original designs for various high-profile cultural organizations and institutions, including Vitra, UNICEF and others. Mendell’s work can be found in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. This exhibition is co-curated by SCAD curator of exhibitions Alexandra Sachs and Pierre Mendell Design Studio director Annette Kröger.

Gallery hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
