Naimar Ramírez exhibition: 'Imprint'

"Imprint" is an exhibition by artist and SCAD alumna Naimar Ramírez (M.F.A., photography, 2013) that brings together existing and newly created works especially for deFINE Art 2015. With a deep interest in cultural anthropology and communication, Ramírez seeks to uncover a new interpretation of space and objects. Through photography and sculpture, the artist blurs the lines of constructed and reconstructed landscapes and imagery.

“Imprint” contains two similar yet disparate bodies of work. The "Papergram" series is a body of work in which Ramírez uses pieces of dampened monochromatic handmade paper and molds it to various surfaces found in her immediate surroundings. This body of work seeks to create sculptural images of her everyday encounters with architecture. In addition to existing "Papergrams," Ramírez has created two site-specific pieces during a recent visit to SCAD Atlanta that will debut in this exhibition. 

The "Mascaras o Mas Caras (Masks or More Faces)" series is also on display. This series pushes Ramírez' practice one step past paper sculpting and employs photographic technique. The artist has appropriated her own photography of landscapes she has encountered and uses the prints to create new figurative works. Once the sculptural figures have been fully realized, Ramírez re-photographs the cast pieces, creating a visual effect of three-dimensional space. This added layer further helps to explore her surroundings and seeks to create an understanding of context within space.
