SCAD is the official university partner of Design Miami/. Join SCAD in the Design Miami/ Design Forum for live-streamed interviews, workshops, conversations, and podcasts.

MIAMI, FLORIDA — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents SCAD AT MIAMI, a celebration of design innovation, contemporary art, and creative education at Design Miami/ during Miami Art Week. For the second consecutive year, SCAD is the official university partner of Design Miami/. This year, the preeminent university for art and design presents the Design Forum, an immersive environment for conversation and collaboration among today’s visionary artists, designers, and thought leaders. The Design Forum features the Design Talks theater, where Design Miami/ guests can connect with industry leaders in engaging conversations on today’s top design trends and innovations. In addition to the Design Talks theater, SCAD created and curated a state-of-the-art media suite, broadcasting live-streamed interviews, workshops, and podcasts throughout the week.

“SCAD, the global creative university, partners with Design Miami/, the global forum for design,” said SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace. “This collaboration is truly magic. SCAD is all about research, ideas, and invention, and we’re bringing joyful intentionality to Design Miami/ through our new media suite in the Design Forum, created by SCAD. Let’s amplify our stories together!”

SCAD AT MIAMI engages alumni work from a range of the university’s award-winning degree programs — from furniture design and fibers to sculpture and ceramics. For the Design Forum, SCAD partnered with Shaw Contract, who generously provided vibrant fabric collections that envelop the space, which is heightened by dynamic textile works by SCAD alumna Trish Andersen (B.F.A., fibers, 2005).

SCAD will lead two thought-provoking discussions in the Design Talks theater. On Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m., SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace will join renowned interior designer, entrepreneur, and television personality Thom Filicia in conversation for her new On Creativity series for SCADcast — the podcast for creatives, by creatives. In On Creativity, Wallace enthralls listeners as she interviews the leading voices in art and design. In this live SCADcast exclusive, Wallace and Filicia discuss his singular career trajectory and the creative spark. On Thursday, Dec. 5, at 3:30 p.m., SCAD will present a cross- cultural panel, moderated by Kari Herrin, SCAD executive director of museums and exhibitions, with Marva Griffin, founder of SaloneSatellite, and designers Nao Tamura and Claudia Moreira Salles who share what drives them.

In addition to the Design Talks programming, SCAD will host numerous creative segments in the Design Forum media suite. Throughout the week, SCAD leaders will interview top artists and designers for the university’s social media, broadcast, and streaming platforms, including Raúl de Nieves, Hannah and Hilary Fagadau, Marilyn Minter, Harry Nuriev, Marcin Rusak, Robert Stilin, and many of SCAD’s talented alumni. Additional programming includes a workshop and conversation with artists Fernando Laposse, Angela Damman, and Jacobo Mendoza, moderated by Cayewah Easley, chair of SCAD fibers, exploring the influence of Indigenous techniques and materials on contemporary design practices. Design Miami/ and other partners, including Whitewall magazine, Lexus, Miami Design District, USM Modular Furniture, and designboom, will also create live content in the media suite.

For the second consecutive year, SCAD will also present a student and alumni showcase at Design Miami/ booth X16. The showcase highlights the university’s mission to provide opportunities for SCAD alumni to present their work to international art and design luminaries. This year, the SCAD showcase will include work by alumni Trish Andersen, Andrew Greenbaum (B.F.A., industrial design, 2015), and Maximilian Rauber (B.F.A., illustration, 2007) as well as Justin Armstrong (M.F.A. painting; B.F.A., painting, 2016).

This iteration of SCAD AT MIAMI marks the seventh year that SCAD has exhibited during Miami Art Week. Last year, the university presented its first alumni showcase at Design Miami/ and co-presented the Visionary Award to SCAD AT MIAMI collaborators Carla Fernández and Pedro Reyes. In 2017, the university presented Chroma, an exhibition of immersive installations by renowned artist and SCAD deFINE ART 2017 honoree Carlos Cruz-Diez, as well as an exhibition of work by alumni Cory Imig (B.F.A., fibers, 2008), Christopher Paul Dean (M.F.A., sculpture, 2016), and Britt Spencer (M.F.A., painting, 2011; B.F.A., illustration, 2005). In previous years, the university presented CURVA, a solo exhibition of work by SCAD alumna Wendy White (B.F.A., fibers, 1993) that investigated the relationship between athletics and the artistic process; i feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin, an exploration of fashion, film, and painting through the eyes of three dynamic artists: multihyphenate performer André 3000 Benjamin and SCAD alumni Greg Brunkalla (B.F.A., video/film, 2001) and Jimmy O’Neal (M.F.A., painting, 2016; B.F.A., illustration, 1989); and Theater of Self, a joint presentation of fashion and photography by London-based artist Daniel Lismore and SCAD alumni Bin Feng (M.F.A., photography, 2017) and Colin Douglas Gray (B.F.A., photography, 2004).

Additional SCAD AT MIAMI events scheduled throughout the week include a VIP and press preview, workshops, and admission information sessions for prospective students and families.

About the artists

Trish Andersen
B.F.A., fibers, 2005

Interdisciplinary artist Trish Andersen creates site-specific installations combining fibers gathered from field to factory floor. Andersen explores the synthesis of temporal, cultural, geographical, and interpersonal boundaries. Typified by an unexpected and varied tactile quality, her work proves there is room for duality — vibrant and muted, sleek and wild, soft and coarse, cut and looped. Andersen has been commissioned by companies including Coca-Cola, Google, and Mercedes-Benz, among others. She lives and works in Savannah, Georgia.

Justin Armstrong
M.F.A. painting; B.F.A., painting, 2016

Justin Armstrong approaches visual content in terms of materiality, surface, and effect. In his painting practice, he juxtaposes line and color to create intense perceptual encounters, while in his digital work, he focuses on thematic transformations of appropriated images. He has shown at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. and Gutstein Gallery in Savannah, Georgia. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, he lives and works in Savannah.

Andrew Greenbaum
B.F.A., industrial design, 2015

Canadian artist and designer Andrew Greenbaum is known for his innovative explorations of inflatable design as well as experimental furniture design and large-scale lighting installations. With his practice, he seeks to create environments that inspire deep connections among people. Greenbaum’s work      is supported by the design studio ACLA, which specializes in industrial design and transportation engineering. His clients include 21st Century Fox, Facebook, Intel, L’Oréal, and Tishman Speyer, among others. He lives and works in Venice Beach, California.

Maximilian Rauber
B.F.A., illustration, 2007

Multidisciplinary artist Maximilian Rauber pursues modes of creative expression that invoke the artist’s hand. Combining his expertise in painting and illustration with a newer practice in pottery, he creates one-of-a-kind ceramics collections with bold hues, graphic patterns, and symbolic imagery. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
