Experience the power of Black musical artists at BAM! Lucas Theatre for the Arts performances
SCAD’s acclaimed concert series celebrating Black History Month and Black musical artists is back once again! This year, BAM! (Black Artists in Music) will honor the influential voices of Black musical artists and their monumental contributions to film in magnetic concerts featuring Grammy Award, Emmy Award, and Tony Award-nominated performers from Broadway, film, and TV.
The SCAD Bee Sharps, the university’s premier vocal ensemble, will join the celebrity lineup alongside star SCAD alumni and students. With iconic hit songs from culture-defining Black artists in gospel, jazz, R&B, soul, spiritual, and blues, as well as spoken word and dance, these uplifting, inspiring, and joyous concert experiences spotlight the rich traditions and innovations of Black music and its influence on the world.

Guest and alumni performers
Anika Noni Rose — Friday, Feb. 21
Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose most recently starred in the critically acclaimed revival of Uncle Vanya on Broadway alongside Steve Carell. Best known for having voiced Tiana in Disney’s The Princess and the Frog — featuring the first African American Disney Princess — Rose authored the tie-in children’s book Princess Tiana’s Perfect Plan and will return to the role for an upcoming Disney+ animated series in 2025. A nine-time NAACP Image Award nominee, her other film and TV credits include Mufasa: The Lion King, Let the Right One In, Maid, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Them, Little Fires Everywhere, The Quad, Roots, and Dreamgirls. In 2004, Rose won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Caroline, or Change, one of five honors she received. Her other Broadway and stage credits include A Raisin in the Sun, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Footloose, and Carmen Jones.
Joaquina Kalukango — Saturday, Feb. 22
Joaquina Kalukango won the 2022 Tony Award and Drama Desk Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her extraordinary performance as Nelly O’Brien in Paradise Square. She received her first Tony Award nomination in 2020 for her performance in the critically acclaimed Slave Play. Her other Broadway credits include Into the Woods, The Color Purple, Holler If Ya Hear Me, and Godspell. Kaulkango’s film and TV credits include Taylor Sheridan’s limited series Lawman: Bass Reeves, where she starred alongside David Oyelowo; Regina King’s directorial debut One Night in Miami; Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us; HBO’s Lovecraft Country; and Lifetime’s Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia. Kaulkango will next executive produce and star as Queen of Disco Gloria Gaynor in the Lifetime film I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story.
Avery Wilson
Actor and singer Avery Wilson has spent his entire life working towards this moment. Encouraged by his family, the New Haven, Conn., native went from singing at McDonald’s every Wednesday to dropping a series of independent releases that culminated with On Top of the World in 2012. A year later, he was personally signed by music legend Clive Davis. He made headlines throughout 2015 performing at the BET Awards and releasing the song “Change My Mind” featuring Migos, which collected more than 7 million Spotify streams and cemented his fervent fanbase. After going independent, Wilson maintained his momentum with the 2018 EP FYI and the 2019 follow-up EP 8:34, the latter receiving acclaim from Rap-Up, Soul Bounce, and more. Along the way, he continued to cross paths with super producers and songwriters, including the Grammy Award-winning Claude Kelly, Damon Thomas, and James Fauntleroy. In 2024, Wilson made his Broadway debut as the Scarecrow in the revival of The Wiz, earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album for the production’s accompanying soundtrack.
Candice Glover
Candice Glover (B.F.A., dramatic writing, 2022) is a vocalist, creative director, and producer born and raised in South Carolina. She began her professional music career after winning the 12th season of American Idol. Since her win, Glover has traveled the globe as a renowned entertainer, showcasing her vocal prowess at residencies in Australia and New Zealand and in shows like Broadway’s Home for the Holidays and Hallmark’s Northpole. She presently serves as the university’s esteemed music coordinator, where she mentors students in vocals and performance etiquette.
Kiandra “Kiki” Richardson
Kiandra “Kiki” Richardson (B.F.A., performing arts, 2013) is a singer, songwriter, performer, and actor well on her way to her artistic breakthrough. Following her graduation from SCAD, Richardson took on the role of Whitney Houston in Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story. After relocating to Los Angeles, she sang backup at Beyoncé’s historic Coachella headlining performance in 2018 and landed the role of Yana on Fox’s Empire, contributing the standout “Heaven” and eight other songs on the show’s final season. Richardson also stars in the BET original series Kingdom Business.
Terrence Williams Jr.
Terrence Williams Jr. (B.F.A., performing arts, 2022) recently made his off-Broadway debut in Titaníque as a background vocalist to the show’s Céline Dion and Cal. Williams has also appeared in Hulu’s The Girl from Plainville. While a SCAD student, he performed on stage in university productions of All Shook Up and Little Women and outside productions of Hairspray and Violet. Williams also participated in the national tour of Ultimate Storytime, and his solo performance of “Birds” on the original cast album has more than 7.5 million streams on Spotify.
