Group exhibition: 'Patterned Fields: Jeremiah Jossim and Gretchen Wagner'

Patterned Fields is an exhibition of works by SCAD alumni artists Jeremiah Jossim (B.F.A., photography, 2010) and Gretchen Wagner (M.F.A., painting, 2023; B.F.A., fibers, 2011). Together, their paintings and prints reverberate with color and mesmerizing designs, revealing their shared interest in pattern and its capacity to transform the picture plane. Jossim articulates spatial depth and renders natural elements in his landscape paintings of nomadic “camping culture” and environments obstructed by built infrastructure through the use of bold linear patterns. Among the colorful stratified layers of sunsets, atmospheric skies, and undulating mountain ranges are unsightly water pipelines and concrete dams — added elements commenting on humanity’s obstruction of nature. Wagner similarly engineers a sense of depth in her optically sensational, abstract prints by embroidering and hand-printing various line formations with machine-like dexterity. These handmade elements not only add dimensionality to the flat paper surface and disrupt the illusion of a digital print, but also subvert prevailing computerized art-making processes. From the compositional to the conceptual, the works in Patterned Fields ultimately demonstrate the boundless applications of color and pattern.

About the artists
Jeremiah Jossim earned an M.F.A. in painting from the University of Florida in 2023. He received his B.F.A. in photography from SCAD in 2010. Jossim has participated in residencies at the Wassaic Project and the Hambidge Center. His work was recently published in New American Painting's South and M.F.A. editions. Jossim’s practice speaks to a deep reverence for the American landscape but also questions the privileges of recreation, tourism, and who has the right to explore and live alternatively in the U.S. Jossim lives and works in Gainesville, Fla.

Gretchen Wagner is an artist and designer whose work is influenced by the use of colors and their interactions as applied in built space. Over the course of her 10-year career, she has worked closely with both clients and manufacturers to address material, color, and trend research. She graduated with a B.F.A. in fibers and M.F.A. in painting from SCAD where she is a professor of foundation studies. Wagner continues to consult with industry partners while furthering her experiments and research surrounding color and theory. She lives and works in Atlanta, Ga.
