Group Exhibition: 'Fast Forward'
A juried exhibition by SCAD students, alumni, faculty, and staff, Fast Forward features works selected from an open call requesting art about the future. Artists included in this exhibition employ traditional art-making methods—painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture—to communicate visions of the future, underscoring an attachment to physical materials rather than technology to visually capture the intangible and unknown. Although pursuing conventional genres, such as landscape, portraiture, and still lifes, these artists embrace extremes. Post-apocalyptic environments bleed with rustic, earthy tones, while pristine utopias and cosmic universes pulsate with electric colors. Humans grapple with their mortality and corporeality, either fighting against the aging process through transformation and enhancement or succumbing to the weight of the future by dissociation. Recognizable objects and symbols from mythology, pop culture, and sci-fi fantasies also populate these scenes, evoking a feeling of nostalgia. By portraying a future that includes remnants of the past, the works in Fast Forward suggest a hope that we might know even a semblance of what lies ahead.
