Hear from Heather Deyling on the work of Masako Miki at 'Art Wise: Educators on Exhibitions'

Join the SCAD Museum of Art and SCAD foundation studies professor Heather Deyling for Art Wise: Educators on Exhibitions, a museum series illuminating academic perspectives on current SCAD MOA exhibitions. For this installment, Deyling discusses her current body of work Invented Hybrids, fantastical interpretations of flora, fauna, and fungal species that exist somewhere between the familiar and the imagined. Rather than illustrating scientific possibilities, these works inhabit an ambiguous space where biology, ecology, and imagination intersect, inviting viewers to question their origins.

SCAD Museum of Art associate curator Brittany Richmond then engages Deyling in an exploration of how her work and practice relate to Masako Miki’s enchanted beings, offering additional insights about the curation of Miki’s exhibition The Garden of Wandering Spirits on a guided tour. An optional — but encouraged — 30-minute wool-felting workshop led by Deyling concludes the experience.

This event is presented as part of the series Art Wise: Educators on Exhibitions, which invites scholastic dialogue on SCAD Museum of Art exhibitions through the expertise of SCAD faculty members from myriad disciplines. Incorporating show-specific lectures, tours, and workshops, the series extends the classroom to the transformative atmosphere of the museum’s galleries, fostering deeper connections to contemporary artists and designers.
