The Sound of Memory: 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' Screening and Conversation
SCADshow, Main Stage
More than 20 years after its release, Michel Gondry’s Academy Award-winning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind remains one of the greatest films of the 21st century. Anchored by peak career performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, the film follows a recently separated couple who decide to have their memories of one another erased via a special procedure, only for regret to set in once they begin and memories of their ups and downs rush back.
Renowned for its inventive storytelling and emotional depth, the film’s sound design plays a crucial role in shaping memory, intimacy, and disorientation. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning sound editor and SCAD chair of sound design Eugene Gearty, who will discuss how sound supports the film’s shifting realities and emotional beats, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the craft behind this modern classic. A pioneer of digital sound since 1982, Gearty was among the first to integrate digital systems into film sound design. His credits include The Silence of the Lambs, Do the Right Thing, Men in Black, and Life of Pi, and he has longstanding collaborations with filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee, Joel and Ethan Coen, Jim Jarmusch, and Lee Daniels.
