Ride the wave to big wins at SCAD Sand Arts Festival 2025
Make a splash at the 2025 Sand Arts Festival! SCAD students and alumni will take to Tybee's South Beach to transform the shoreline into a dazzling sculpture gallery — a gallery featuring a large-scale sand drawing by environmental sand artist Andres Amador. Teams and solo competitors will set out to wow spectators and judges alike for a chance at several big prizes.
Whether you plan to stroll among the sandy sights or dive into the competition, be sure to pack the essentials: sunscreen, sunglasses, a picnic lunch, and plenty of water.
This event, presented by the SCAD School of Foundation Studies, is free and open to the public.
For contestants
When registering, each team will be required to select a team captain and register up to five team members using their SCAD student ID numbers. Be prepared with all members of your team or their student ID numbers before you begin the registration process. SCAD Foundation Studies Student Group and Large Group category teams may have up to 10 members to compete against other groups.
Alumni can use this form to register to participate in advance. Alumni may also register the day of the event, Friday, May 2, at the South Beach pier.
Online registration for students is open April 4–27. Those who do not register online may still visit the South Beach pier the day of the event as a standby registrant. All contestants, including those for Sand Jam (Drawing), are required to register to participate.

Sculpting, location, and materials
Sculpting in the wrong area before time begins may result in contestants being asked to start over in their correct area. Contestants should also work above the tide line. Look for the high tide signs, category area, and category number.
Contestants are responsible for all materials brought to the beach. No glass containers or alcoholic beverages are permitted, and all garbage and materials should be collected, stored, discarded, or removed from the beach by the end of the day.
Contestants may not walk on the sand dunes or disturb the beach grass.
Entries in the Sandcastle, Sand Sculpture, and Sand Relief competitions must contain only sand and seawater. No other materials will be allowed. The use of natural objects found on the beach (e.g., shells, driftwood, seaweed, etc.), as well as the use of color or binding agents, dyes, or supports is expressly prohibited. Students who use prohibited materials will be disqualified and ineligible for prizes.
Judging begins at 2 p.m., however, contestants may continue editing their masterpieces as needed. After the 3:30 p.m. award ceremony, any contestants whose work was not awarded prizes will be asked to participate in the SCAD SERVE Sundown Stomp. During the Sundown Stomp, these contestants will level the sand in their area to return their area of the beach back to its original condition for the preservation of sea turtles and other wildlife.
All winning sculptures must remain on display until 5 p.m. Competition winners will proceed to the pavilion to claim their winning prize.
