Steve Liu thesis exhibition: 'National Monument: Fueling the Way'
In his M.F.A. thesis exhibition National Monument: Fueling the Way, Steve Liu showcases photographic works captured during his personal travels throughout the U.S. As Liu refueled his vehicle during his extensive journeys, gas stations became his constant companions, sparking an interest in their varied aesthetics, surroundings, and physical conditions. Documenting these iconic symbols of Americana from an outsider perspective, he reframes them as living fossils ladened with unknown stories. Liu’s works recall the mid-century New Topographics movement of photographers who sought the objective portrayal of man-made landscapes. Evoking this style, he exposes the silent and unassuming architecture of his subjects through neutral tones and precise lighting, emphasizing their often overlooked yet essential role in American industrialization.
