Portrait of Sauda Mitchell

Uncover the legacy of slavery with artist-archivist Sauda Mitchell at Comb the City with SCAD Alumni

Sauda Mitchell (B.A., visual communication, 2013) delves into stories embedded within the African American collective memory with Re-Cor-Dare, her solo #art912 exhibition at the Telfair Museum in Savannah, Ga.

Re-Cor-Dare examines the legacy of slavery in the U.S. through five interconnected stories, from the Middle Passage to present-day social injustices African Americans face. Mitchell crosses platforms using QR codes as an invitation to viewers to go deeper into selected works. There, viewers discover digitized collections of personal papers, photographs, artifacts, and curated digital collections related to the Black experience.

Sauda Mitchell is an American printmaker, archivist, and educator from Winston-Salem, N.C. She currently serves as the SCAD Jen Library archives and special collections librarian and, in 2017, was named an Alumni Atelier ambassador at SCAD. She has exhibited locally at The Beach Institute and the SCAD Museum of Art. Select works are held in the SCAD permanent collection. Mitchell was selected as a contributing artist for The Hand Magazine, the premier forum for “alternative” and historic photographic processes and various types of printmaking.

#art912 is a Telfair Museums initiative dedicated to elevating the visibility and vitality of artists living and working in Savannah through exhibition opportunities, public programs, and outreach.

The event is free and open to the public.
