Christopher Jin thesis exhibition: 'Aesthetic Error'
Explore the hybridization of culture through the documentation of Chinese restaurants in the U.S. in Aesthetic Error, a thesis photography exhibition by Christopher Jin (M.F.A. photography).
As an Asian person studying in the U.S., the artist found nostalgia and emotional shelter in Chinese restaurants. However, after visiting restaurants in several states, he found motifs and cultural signifiers that were out of place such as a fleur-de-lis mosaic pattern in Illinois and vibrant colors of the Southwest in New Mexico.
Through his photographic diptychs contrasting these interior spaces with the context of their larger environment, Jin makes blatant the connection between East and West, and the tendency to reduce the richness, complexity, and specificity of culture into recognizable stereotypes.
