Reimagine photography with Mark Dorf and Naimar Ramírez exhibition at Photo London
SCAD presents an exhibition by alumni Mark Dorf (B.F.A., photography, 2011) and Naimar Ramírez (M.F.A., photography, 2013) at Photo London, the U.K.’s premier photography fair. These celebrated artists use photography to contest common perceptions of reality and explore the possibilities of images as objects. They each engage critically with the production of images in connection to sculpture, exploring the tension between the inherent flatness of the medium and its potential for three-dimensionality.
Dorf is known for his digital manipulation of photography to question humanity’s relationship with the natural world, technology and the man-made. He creates installations in which the manipulated image is critical and integrated into a larger tableau that includes depictions of flora with synthetic props, illustrating the co-dependence of interconnected systems like nature and urban and virtual environments.
Ramírez approaches her artwork through sculpted forms. Her series "Máscaras [Masks]" begins with photographs of her environment, whether natural or man-made, which are printed and sculpted into masks through a series of intricate cuts and folds. The resulting sculptures of anonymous faces are then re-photographed in the environment from which they originated.
