Shop Carla Fernández pop-up

The SCAD FASH Film Salon transforms into a pop-up shop featuring unique, handmade works by Carla Fernández as part of SCAD deFINE ART 2019. Her ethical, fashion works blend centuries-old indigenous techniques from Mexico with forward-thinking contemporary design. The brand has gained international acclaim for its approach to preserving the rich cultural heritage of Mexico's indigenous communities and transforming it into beautiful clothing, textiles and housewares. This pop-up shop is presented in conjunction with an exhibition of Fernández’s designs on view at the SCAD Museum of Art Feb. 12 through Sept. 5, 2019.

Fernández works at the forefront of ethical fashion, having developed a design pedagogy that teams with indigenous communities throughout Mexico to keep traditions from extinction and to give artisans a way to make a living from their art.

Carla Fernández is her eponymous Mexico City-based fashion label inspired by the geometrics and textile richness of Mexico. The brand has gained international acclaim for its approach to preserving the rich cultural heritage of Mexico’s indigenous communities and transforming it into beautiful clothing, textiles and housewares. Its contemporary take on handcrafted methods proves ethical fashion can be striking, avant-garde and forward-looking. Fernández and members of her atelier travel throughout Mexico acting as agents of change and innovation, discovering communities of artisans who specialize in handmade textiles, utilizing centuries-old indigenous techniques.

This event is free and open to the public and part of SCAD deFINE ART 2019, held Feb. 26–28 at university locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia.
