Carl Johnson
Striving to honor a moment in time — to isolate a single thought — Carl Johnson's art is driven by process as he manipulates woven wire to visually recreate the conceptual. His sculptures defy the laws of materiality, denoting an intriguing relationship between fabric and metal and amplifying the effect these contrasting elements have on form, structure, and light. Johnson was a 2021 Windgate-Lamar Fellow and has attended residencies at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Texas, and Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, Penn. He has participated in shows and fairs such as ArtFields, Lake City, S.C.; American Craft Made Baltimore, Md.; and 4 Bridges Arts Festival, Chattanooga, Tenn. Johnson was born in Washington, D.C. where he currently lives and works.
