Michael Bailey-Gates
After graduating from the School of Visual Arts the same year they won the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Award, Michael Bailey-Gates hard-launched into the professional art world as an instant visionary. Their work is heavily focused on portraiture, influenced by the intimacy of classical studio photography. Working among a close circle of collaborators and subjects, Bailey-Gates often introduces a subversive edge to their photography, interrogating gender roles and transgressing norms. The resulting body of work is transformative, emotional, and keenly attentive to the subject's self. Bailey-Gates has collaborated with fashion brands such as Valentino, Armani, and Ami and contributed to publications including Vogue, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone. Their monograph, A Glint in the Kindling, was published in 2021.
