16 SCAD student animated films earn official selections at U.S. film festivals
Animated short films from SCAD students and alumni earned official selections at eight film festivals around the U.S.
The short films, from 16 SCAD animation and visual effects students, include a radish's romp through a farmer's market (Runaway Radish), a man's sprint through a city to make a date (Racing the Sunset), and a night with a Ouija board that unleashes an evil spirit (Ouija).
Four student animations were chosen to screen at the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina: Con Amore, by Tianze Fan (B.F.A., animation, 2018); Runaway Radish, by Grace Hayes-Dineen (B.F.A., animation, 2019); Wander, by Erin O'Neal (B.F.A., animation, 2019); and Function, by Abigail Spencer (B.F.A., animation, 2019).
SCAD students were also well represented at the 2019 Nashville Film Festival and the 2020 Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, scoring three appearances at each event. The Nashville selections included two stop-motion shorts: Expend by Bismark Fernandes (M.F.A., animation, 2018) and Night Train, by Deirdre Beck (B.F.A., animation, 2018). The Cinequest selections showcased a range of animation styles, from Molly Duncan's (B.F.A., animation, 2019) computer-generated short Flocked to the mixed media style of Max Johnson's (B.F.A., animation, 2019) Butch.
SCAD students also garnered multiple selections at the 2020 Florida Film Festival, with the two films chosen – Zandria Ross's (B.F.A., visual effects, 2019) Doll Story and Ashley Young's (B.F.A., animation, 2018) Ouija – featuring children's toys inhibited by evil spirits.
Student animations also appeared at four other U.S. film festivals: the 2020 Ann Arbor Film Festival in Michigan, the 2019 Austin Film Festival, the 2020 Santa Barbara Film Festival in California, and the 2020 Slamdance Film Festival in Utah.
