How to apply for and receive VA benefits

SCAD supports veterans and works with the Veterans Administration to ensure that former service members have access to benefits programs that enable them to complete their education. All service members should speak with their Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within their military service prior to enrolling at SCAD or any institution. Since military funding is limited, it is important for all service members to use all their resources in making any educational decision.

  1. Visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.
  2. If you're a first-time user, you must create an account.
  3. Select "Apply for education benefits."
  4. Answer the series of questions, which will guide you to complete the proper application.
  5. Once the VA processes your application, you will receive a certificate of eligibility or authorization form. This will take six to eight weeks.
  6. After you have applied, been accepted and paid the enrollment fee, you must complete the Veterans Data Enrollment Questionnaire. In this questionnaire, you will be asked to upload your certificate of eligibility or authorization form.
  7. Once using veterans benefits at SCAD, the university will automatically certify enrollment electronically with the VA each quarter, as long as you have not reached any annual funding limits or exhausted your benefit.
  8. You may consult with your adviser during the billing period for an estimate of your benefit coverage. There is no need to send SCAD a request to complete the VA Form 22-1999.
