SCAD architecture student wins Lyceum Fellowship
SCAD architecture student Leslie Finnie was named the 2018 winner of the Lyceum Fellowship, a juried competition where students were tasked with designing a new food market in the Canadian city of Guelph. Finnie, a graduate architecture student at SCAD, received $12,000 to travel abroad to Japan and Thailand to continue working on her thesis project.
Lyceum Fellowship entrants were tasked with expanding the existing Guelph City Market from its current location to include a historic armory and assembly hall. Finnie's design, "Guelph Living City Market," incorporates vertical gardens and sustainable practices to support the "urban metabolism" of the new market — an interactive environment where patrons explore all aspects of the culinary experience.
Established in 1985, the Lyceum Fellowship seeks to advance architecture by engaging students in design and travel to enhance their studies. The fellowship has awarded more than $500,000 to nearly 100 students who have traveled across the world exploring the intersection of culture, history and building design in different contexts.
