The SCAD flagship building was originally named Preston Hall. Poetter Hall dates back to 1892 and when it was the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory. This 36,248 square-foot building contained a drill hall, ballroom, large company rooms and a guard club. Poetter Hall was the first building that SCAD acquired in 1979. The ballroom on the second floor served as the school's first library and had a unique floor mural that depicted scenes of books and book cases. Today the space serves as May Poetter Gallery but the library's mural can still be seen underfoot. Poetter Hall is also home to the SCAD welcome center, the department of admission, and shopSCAD.
