Jewelers Mutual Studio
Jewelers Mutual Studio houses the SCAD jewelry department, the largest of its kind in the U.S. Built in 1970, this 13,562-square-foot facility originally housed the Ivan Allen office supply and interior design firm. It was later purchased by Joseph Byrd and Associates, a stock photography company next door. SCAD acquired the building in 2001 and renamed it in honor of insurer and business solutions provider Jewelers Mutual Group in 2026. Jewelers Mutual has partnered with SCAD to expand the pool of commercial-ready bench jewelers and improve student and graduate access to retailers, manufacturers, and designers.
Jewelers Mutual Studio features technology that enables students to fabricate, cast, finish, enamel, laser weld, anodize, electroplate, electroform, smith silver, and set stones. Tools include LaserStar Compact and LaserStar workstations for laser welding, a ROD Induction Heating Solution for casting, a microscope system, a Stratasys Dimension SST 1200 printer for ABS plastic, two Solidscape T66 wax printers, two Roland JWX-10 milling machines, and four advanced SensAble pens for digital sculpting, among other tools. SCADlab, which offers students 3D printers and large-format photo printers for special projects and regular use, is also located within the building.
