Norma Kamali

Fashion designer and entrepreneur

Norma Kamali’s eponymous women’s brand includes lines for fashion, fitness, health and beauty. Christened "the arbiter of inventive clothes" by Women’s Wear Daily, Kamali redefined the industry. Her signature silhouettes — High-Heeled Sneakers, the Sleeping Bag Coat and the Parachute Collection — are iconic, and she is often credited with introducing highly directional swimwear and functional, everyday sportswear.

Kamali first began designing and selling garments in 1967 after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. In 1978, she launched OMO Norma Kamali, representing her "on my own" entrepreneurial approach.

Kamali has won numerous industry accolades, including three consecutive Coty American Fashion Critics’ Awards, a plaque on the Fashion Walk of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Her works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.
