SCAD School of Film and Acting Presents: 'Pippin'
More than 150 talented students, led by a Broadway actor, bring this spectacular musical to The Lucas Theatre for the Arts
SAVANNAH, GEORIGA — Savannah College of Art and Design's (SCAD) School of Film and Acting is delighted to present Pippin, the spectacular Stephen Schwartz coming-of-age musical at the historic Lucas Theatre May 25-28.
"Pippin has been entertaining audiences for 50 glorious years and we wanted to bring that sense of magic, theatricality, and storytelling to the Lucas," said SCAD performing arts professor Victor Malana Maog, the play's director. "This Broadway musical delivers the very best of SCAD's faculty, student, and guest artists' talents on and off stage. There's no university in America that showcases this level of artistry, collaboration, and enchantment. The professionally designed sets and costumes are jaw-dropping as are the performances where our students are mentored by industry masters. With a full orchestra, it's a night not to be missed!"
The production involves more than 150 brilliant students from SCAD's School of Film and Acting including performers, production designers, costume designers, and sound designers. The cast stars freshman Eli Talley (Pippin), graduate student Joseph Gauzza (King Charlemagne the Great), junior Eric Ackerman (Lewis), graduate student Katie Rodgers (Fastrada), graduate student Zora Umeadi (Berte), junior Caroline Feduccia (Catherine).
SCAD performing arts professor Isiah Johnson (Leading Player) lends his professional acting experience to the production. Johnson has appeared on and off Broadway, working with Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice and Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton and is a current season regular on the Netflix series Florida Man. Local young actor Emmett Mills Witchel (Theo) is also part of the cast.
Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. Pippin's message is universal and will connect with audiences across the age spectrum.
There will be four performances of PIppin from Thursday, May 25 through Sunday, May 28. There is an 8:00 p.m. show on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a 3:00 p.m. show on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at the Savannah Box Office, located at 216 E. Broughton Street. Tickets are $5 for SCAD card holders; $15 for seniors, military and other students, $20 for the general public. On Thursday, March 9, admission is free for SCAD Card holders.
