SCAD students earn renowned Red Dot spotlight as design laureates

Students and alumni win the Best of the Best Award at Red Dot in Singapore

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has earned prominence on another international stage after three alumni and four students were recently recognized at the prestigious Red Dot Awards in Singapore.

Red Dot Awards — a coveted prize of approval from Germany-based design authority Design Zentrum — draws more than 11,000 submissions each year from roughly 60 countries across the globe, making it one of the most ambitious worldwide competitions in design.

The Red Dot recognition ceremony united SCAD with design leaders from around the world. It was held on Friday, Sept. 26, at the landmark Red Dot Museum, Singapore. The location has extra significance for SCAD, with many of its successful alumni hailing from and now working in the city-state, including Academy Award-winner and 2003 SCAD ‘Outstanding Alumni,’ Nickson Fong.

"For the past 35 years, SCAD has advanced higher education in creative disciplines. I applaud our award-winning students and thank Red Dot for recognizing innovation and excellence," said Paula Wallace, SCAD president and co-founder.

A jury of international design experts selected astounding work from graduates Yue Jia (M.A., industrial design, 2014) and Sebastian Campos (B.F.A., industrial design, 2012) for Red Dot Awards.

Graduate Qing Xu (M.A., industrial design, 2014) and current students Jian Shi (M.F.A., industrial design), Weijing Zhao (M.F.A., industrial design), Yunman Gu (M.F.A., industrial design), and Holly Chisholm (B.F.A., industrial design) each earned the Best of the Best Award, a top recognition given to groundbreaking concepts in the field of production design.

Securing seven Red Dot Awards is another testimony to how SCAD’s unique approach to education is fostering exemplary designers who thrive at and after their time as students, connecting with each other on an international level.
