Savannah College of Art and Design takes top honors at Walt Disney Imagineering’s Design Competition for second year
After coming in first at last year’s Walt Disney Imagineering's Design Competition, SCAD students once again reigned victorious. Up against 280 project submissions, the winning team of Nicholas Hammond (B.F.A. architecture), Remi Jeffrey-Coker (M.F.A. illustration), Carolyn Teves (B.F.A. production design) and Zeke Waters (B.F.A. production design) successfully collaborated to create an experience that explores a natural or ancient wonder of the world. Their submission, "The Rose of Babylon," a botanical inquisitorium for people of all ages, re-imagined the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon to help rebuild the nation of Iraq.
The top team was also awarded a cash prize of $1,000, and an additional $1,000 grant was awarded to SCAD, as a sponsoring university. The team also received an all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney Imagineering in California to present their project to Imagineering executives, meet and network with Imagineers, go behind-the-scenes to see how Disney magic is created and interview for paid internships during their visit.
The annual competition examines mastery of skills and talents, guest experience, diversity and market perspective, uniqueness, adherence to project challenge, and team collaboration. Judges also examine each teams’ ability to tell a compelling and engaging story, its broad appeal to a wide audience, and a knowledge and passion for Walt Disney Imagineering.
This is the second year SCAD has held onto the top spot. Last year’s winning team project, "Caguaya," incorporated submersed tunnels, underwater theater, and ecological stewardship.
