For second year in a row, SCAD is ranked No. 1 by Red Dot Design Rankings

In 2018, the prestigious Red Dot Design Rankings placed SCAD as the No. 1 university in the U.S. and in the top two universities in the Americas and Europe for the second year in a row.

Since 2005, Red Dot has become one of the most sought-after seals of quality for good design.  To achieve the No. 1 ranking, SCAD’s results were based on its Red Dot Design Concept awards over the past five years, including individual student awards, with the most recent year most heavily weighted.

In the Red Dot Communication Design category, which does not assign rankings, SCAD also broke its own awards record. Undergraduate and graduate students across 10 majors took home 40 Red Dot awards in 2018, making it the university’s best Red Dot showing year to date.

The 2018 Red Dot Design Concept winners were Megan Kiely (B.F.A., industrial design, 2018) for "Dreaminals," an app integrated toy that lets children build the animal of their dreams. Julia Wheatley (B.F.A., industrial design, 2018) and Alex Sander (B.F.A., user experience (UX) design, 2018) also won for "Omwala," a multipurpose convertible vest designed to comfort and protect refugee children.

In the Red Dot Communication Design category, Meagan Vanderhill (M.F.A., graphic design and visual experience, 2018) and Cody Reppert (B.F.A., user experience (UX) design, 2019) each took home two awards. Vanderhill won for her graphic work inspired by the book, "Einstein’s Dreams." Reppert was part of the winning teams that created "Flexion," a patient interface knee brace app, and "Session," a file management system that provides hyper-specific query results curated to specific projects.

The SCAD animation department was well represented with award winners, including Marvic Jason Adoptante (B.F.A., animation, 2017) for "Eat," which explores world cuisine; Gabrielle Kash (B.F.A., animation, 2017) for "Lorem Ipsum," which combines student audio interviews with stop motion and 2D animation; Lorenzo Estrada (B.F.A., animation, 2017) for "Pas Redouble," a four-minute film about a high school band; and Raghav Arumugam (M.F.A., animation, 2017) for his animated documentary "People of Color," which explores race, culture and perception in America.

Film and television majors also took home awards including Esraece Yildiz (M.F.A., film and television, 2017) for "The Anniversary," a dark comedy about an elderly couple celebrating their golden year; Jo Yee Chu (B.F.A., film and television, 2017) for "$30 to Antarctica," an indie short about Ku Foon Chau; and Alec Bonk (B.F.A., film and television, 2019), Nick Booth (B.F.A., sound design, 2018) and Leo Cho (B.F.A., sound design, 2018) for "Howl," an eerie short that combines every day sounds with electronic timbres.
