The contest is sponsored by the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association, the SCAD writing department, and the SCAD photography department. Submit writing to Beth Concepcion; submit photographs to Jenny Kuhla. Prizes include: $200 first prize, $100 second prize, $50 third prize; writing and/or photographs to be published in BoatUS magazine, which has a circulation of 1.3 million readers; and writing and/or photographs to be exhibited at the Fall 2009 Meeting of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association at Savannah’s Hyatt Regency Hotel. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is a 1,200-mile waterway that runs along the U.S. Atlantic Coast from Norfolk, Virginia, to Miami, Florida. Some lengths consist of natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and sounds; others are man made canals. Savannah’s portion of the Intracoastal Waterway can be seen running beneath the drawbridge on the Islands Expressway (President Street) and again beneath the bridge on Highway 80 around Thunderbolt. Writers and photographers may focus their four to 10 page nonfictional essays and/or photographs about any portion of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway on the following subtopics: the environmental angle (marshy wetlands wildlife, ecosystem, preservation); the human angle (boating, fishing, recreation); the commercial angle (barges, tourist industries, marinas, docks, restaurants); the personal angle (what the Intracoastal Waterway locale means to you); the historical angle; or how all and any of the above are intertwined. For more information, e-mail James Lough in the writing department or Jenny Kuhla in the photography department.
