Reception for Steve Aishman exhibition: 'The Aishmans'

Thursday, July 9, 2015

Pinnacle Gallery

Savannah, GA

320 E. Liberty St.

Join us for a reception celebrating “The Aishmans,” a solo exhibition of photographs and video by Steve Aishman, SCAD Atlanta dean of academic services and professor of photography.

Presented by SCAD, the exhibition offers an intimate glimpse into domestic life, showing how declarations of love can come in many sizes, shapes and colors.

“People don’t send love letters anymore, but they send text acronyms like personal coded messages,” Aishman laments. The exhibition catalogs the latest in more than 16 years of daily notes written by the artist to his family.

“The Aishmans” includes affectionate messages for Aishman’s wife, as well as romantic, witty and often irreverent chalkboard dispatches to his family. The exhibition focuses on notes written in a similar format to shopping lists but conveying as much love as a sonnet.

Also on display are Aishman’s interactive photographs of frozen moments of domesticity, allegories for the passions found in everyday existence with loved ones. Through the use of a downloadable image recognition phone application, visitors will delight in experiencing surprising video content created by the artist.

Before joining the faculty at SCAD, Aishman taught photography and cultural theory at institutions such as Harvard University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He earned an A.B. in astrophysics from Princeton University and an M.F.A. in photography from Tufts University. His artwork revolves around issues of contemporary visual language and has been shown nationally and internationally, most recently at the Hagedorn Foundation Gallery in Atlanta.

This exhibition is curated by Storm Janse van Rensburg, SCAD head curator of exhibitions.

The reception is free and open to the public.

Take a ride on the complementary shuttle from Pinnacle Gallery to the SCAD Museum of Art and Alexander Hall to celebrate additional exhibition openings. View a complete listing of events at the museum and other SCAD galleries.
