Pierre Mendell exhibition: 'At First Sight'

"At First Sight" presents an exhibition of selected posters, books, brochures and design concepts by Pierre Mendell (1929-2008), one of the world’s leading graphic designers. For almost 30 years, Mendell played a key role in creating the visual identity of the Neue Sammlung, State Museum of Applied Arts and Design, Munich. The German designer's posters became a prominent feature in advertising columns and billboards around Munich, including designs for Neue Sammlung exhibitions and advertisements for the Bavarian State Opera.

Reductive forms and bold use of color characterize Mendell’s designs. He said, "I look for simple communicative solutions as I am aware that our world is flooded by an overabundance of pictures and that a simple, direct solution might get the message across better. At first sight, so to speak." "At First Sight" includes more than 40 examples of his original designs for various high-profile cultural organizations and institutions, including Vitra, UNICEF and others. Mendell’s work may be found in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. This exhibition is co-curated by Alexandra Sachs, SCAD curator of exhibitions, and Annette Kröger, director, Pierre Mendell Design Studio, Munich.
