Reception for Taylor Griswold exhibition: ‘Thanatophobia’

In her thesis exhibition, M.F.A. photography student Taylor Griswold presents a collection of large-scale photographs representing a complex and intimate look at the fears surrounding her own mortality and that of her loved ones. Influenced by abstract expressionism, the images are metaphors for her anxiety surrounding the unknown, loneliness and isolation.

Griswold’s work draws inspiration from Bernd and Hilla Becher’s “Typologies” and Irving Penn’s “Underfoot” series. Examining the unique ability of photography to document and transform, “Thanatophobia” invites viewers to identify with the artist’s human experience by thinking about their own.
