These travel/study programs provide students with the opportunity to earn college credit and develop an in-depth understanding of their individual courses of study at various locations throughout the world.

Some programs focus on specific academic and studio disciplines, while others feature a variety of disciplines. Travel throughout the United States and around the world emphasizes artistic, historical and cultural experiences. Programs may combine independent study or internships with traditional coursework. Art capitals of the world are explored in depth, with side trips into the local countryside. Students in all majors find sessions relevant to their career preparation. Recent destinations have included Australia, China, Japan, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C

Tuition
Tuition for off-campus courses is equal to that of other courses taken at SCAD. Additional program costs, including travel, housing and meals, vary according to program location and duration. Financial aid and scholarships are available.

Coursework
A focus on upper-level seminars promotes career preparation through interaction with working professionals. Sessions include study in contemporary art and design. Professionally-oriented seminars are offered within the exciting milieu of galleries, museums and theaters. Visits to agencies, showrooms and artists’ studios, as well as special guest lectures, complement the coursework.

How to Apply
  • Current SCAD Students — Space for off-campus study is limited; obtain application materials at the office of off-campus programs in Jen Library.
  • Prospective Students — Those not currently attending SCAD must apply and be accepted to the college; a $50 nonrefundable application fee is required. Students at other colleges and universities may apply as transient students. Once admitted, students must then apply for acceptance to a specific program through the office of off-campus programs.
All applicants for off-campus study must submit a Recommendation completed by a faculty member of their college or university. Incomplete application forms cannot be processed.


New York City Workspace Opportunity

The SCAD painting department has operated the New York City Workspace Opportunity in Manhattan since Summer 2001. Through the program, a current SCAD painting student is selected to utilize studio workspace near Times Square. An eligible student will be selected based on qualifying criteria and the excellence of the applicant’s proposal to complete program electives and/or internship credit.

Eligibility:
  • Any declared painting major enrolled at SCAD for the stated academic term
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Age 21 years or older
  • Graduate level (minimum 30 credit hours completed) or advanced undergraduate level (minimum 120 credit hours completed with at least 30 credit hours completed at SCAD)
Submit completed applications to the director of off-campus programs at Jen Library by the respective deadlines. Include application form, project proposal, 10-20 slides of work related to the project proposal (slides or power point slideshow are acceptable), résumé and current unofficial college transcript or CAPP.

The application deadline for Summer 2008 (June 23–Aug. 14) and Fall 2008 (Sept. 15–Nov. 6) is Feb. 8, 2008, 5 p.m. Winners will be announced Feb. 22, 2008. For more information, call 912.525.5803.

Fall 2007 Recipient
Charles Clary is the painting department's New York City Workspace recipient for Fall 2007. His thesis exhibition, "Rudimental Hybrids," is on display in May Poetter Gallery through Sept. 28. Clary's mixed media compositions chronicle the tales of biological creatures spawned from the frequencies of percussion beats. Read his blog.
